Mobile Devices

About mobile devices at UTAS

The University of Tasmania (UTAS) has a rapidly growing collection of staff utilising mobile devices, such as iPads, for day to day work. These devices allow staff to continue to be productive whilst on the move and allow access to UTAS resources anytime from anywhere. UTAS is currently recommending Apple due to their product maturity and large list of apps. This will evolve over time as the Android, Windows and WebOS tablets and applications mature and UTAS delivered services become platform agnostic.

What services can these mobile devices access?
All Apple iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) have the ability to connect to Wi-Fi networks. Through UConnect on campus, and whilst using VPN off campus, staff can also access:

  • UTAS Exchange email
  • Internet access
    • Including UTAS based web services
      • UTAS Wikis
      • HR Web Kiosk*
  • Network file share drives
    • N: Drive, P: Drive, R: Drive and/or S Drive*
  • WebDav services

What do I need?
Apart from the mobile device, you will need:

  • Be connected to the UTAS UConnect network. Not the UConnect-Setup network.
  • To have your iOS device connected to the staff UConnect subnet. To check this, make sure you have a 10.200.x.x address. If you have a 10.100.x.x please contact the ITR service desk
  • An active iTunes account to make purchases.
  • To purchase and have installed the catalogue of apps mentioned in the guides below.
* For access to certain UTAS services whilst outside the UConnect network, VPN will need to be configured.
