The Conference will run over two days in January 2013 (Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th).
The first day of the Conference will feature presentations on a variety of topics, including the keynote address which will be delivered by Professor Marsha Baum from the University of New Mexico (USA). Marsha will be discussing the lessons Australia can learn from the American animal law experience. We will also hear from UTAS Sociology Professor Rob White on the topic of 'species justice', and Associate Professor Alex Bruce from the Australian National University about the relationship between animals and competition and consumer law and policy. After lunch, UTAS law Professor Gary Meyers will give a presentation on wildlife law, focusing on the protection of endangered species and indigenous hunting and fishing rights in Australia. A highlight on the first day will be the public Q and A on the very topical issue of live export and the law. The panel for the Q and A will include recent Voiceless Eureka Prize winner, Professor Clive Phillips from the University of Queensland and Dr Malcolm Caulfield, Founder and Principal Lawyer of the Animal Welfare Community Legal Centre in Tasmania. The Q and A will be followed by a complimentary afternoon tea in the law school foyer, providing the Tasmanian community with an opportunity to engage with Conference participants and speakers. Proceedings will conclude at 5pm.
The second day will feature two workshops and a panel debate. The first workshop will be directed by legal education expert, Professor Nick James from Bond University. The workshop will examine current approaches to teaching animal law in Australia, with a view to identifying some 'best practice' principles. A number of our other speakers also possess significant experience with tertiary education (Prof Rob White), legal education generally (Prof Gary Meyers) and teaching animal law specifically (Prof Marsha Baum; Ass. Prof. Alex Bruce; Steven White). In between these workshops we will hold a panel discussion, evaluating the adequacy of the Tasmanian animal welfare protection framework. The speakers for this event will be announced shortly, but they will include representatives from the Tasmanian State Government, legal commentators and representatives from Tasmanian animal welfare groups. We are also fortunate to have a presentation from Ruth Hatten (Legal Counsel for Voiceless) who will be discussing the legislative framework for the protection of factory farmed animals and kangaroos in Australia.
