Changes to the Law Curriculum commencing in 2013 are in large part aimed at rejuvenating the curriculum and ensuring a smoother transition from year 1 (the foundation year) to year 2 (first year law proper), particularly with the introduction of a new unit, Legal Reasoning, which will provide students with a solid grounding in legal thinking and methodology.
In addition, the full year units (Contract, Torts, Property, Constitutional Law) have been split up to create a clearer introduction and context setting for each of these areas of law. The Faculty of Law is introducing two new units: Foundations of Private Law (which comprises aspects of contract, torts, property etc) and Foundations of Public Law which feeds into later study in Administrative Law and Constitutional Law. This structure is intended to ensure a more integrated, less compartmentalised, understanding of the law, leading on to the capstone unit of Remedies in the final year.
Another important change is the greater flexibility in the selection of electives. Under the new Curriculum, subjects seen as essential for all students (International Law and Legal Theory) are incorporated as core units, freeing up student choice in relation to electives.
