After graduating from UTAS Law School in 2009, I flew back to Maldives to join the Prosecutor General’s Office which had only recently come in to existence with the birth of our new constitution in 2008. Taking the first steps in my legal career as a Public Prosecutor, in a country struggling to transition into democracy has been exciting, challenging and rewarding.
As a prosecutor my work involves analysing cases sent in for prosecution, making chargingdecisions and litigating in court. My job also gives me the opportunity to travel and represent the justice sector in a number of national and international forums. I believe that the invaluable education and practical skills I have gained at UTAS will help me contribute to the currentefforts towards democratic reform in my country.
Long before I came to university, I wanted to become a lawyer. When it came to choosing the right university I wanted to make sure that I would be gaining more than just a degree. I wanted a university experience that would broaden my horizons and guide me to achieve my personal and professional goals. UTAS was the best decision I
have ever made!
The law program at UTAS is very practical and teaches you legal skills that build a solid foundation for your legal career. The lecturers are supportive and approachable. When I first arrived in UTAS, the fact that most of the lecturers were the authors of our text books left me in complete awe. The International Student Support Program was a constant source of support for those of us adapting to a new environment. Tasmania was the perfect study environment; clean, serene and breathtakingly beautiful, not to mention the warmest and friendliest people I have ever met.
My only regret is that the time I spent in UTAS was too short. I used to describe my experiences in Tasmania to my brother so enthusiastically that he was convinced that there was no better place to go. Now, as a third year law student, he tells me that UTAS was the best decision he has ever made.
