The Law Faculty’s Dr Heather Forrest recently attended the 59th International Public Meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This latest meeting was held in Johannesburg from 26-29th June 2017.
ICANN is a nonprofit organisation responsible for coordinating the maintenance and procedures of several databases related to the namespaces of the Internet, ensuring the network's stable and secure operation. ICANN holds meetings three times a year in locations around the world. These meetings constitute an essential part of ICANN's global consensus-development and outreach efforts, so members of the public should join these face-to-face when feasible.
Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) deals with policy making on generic top-level domains(e.g., .com, .org, .biz). The GNSO strives to keep gTLDs operating in a fair, orderly fashion across one global Internet, while promoting innovation and competition. Dr Forrest is GSNO Vice-Chair representing the Intellectual Property Constituency.
