The Library’s three year strategic plan closely supports and reflects the UTAS strategic plan, Open to Talent. The plan outlines the Library’s strategic priorities and specific initiatives to achieve these goals. The Library and each of its Committees have annual operational plans that are closely aligned to this strategic plan.

The Library is an essential partner in the University’s mission of creating, preserving, communicating and applying knowledge. The Library provides quality client-focused services and scholarly information resources to support the UTAS community in achieving its research, learning and teaching aspirations.

What we want to be

The Library will be integral to the UTAS student and research experience and valued by the UTAS community for our client-focused services and expertise in the provision and management of scholarly information resources.

Our libraries will provide high-quality spaces – both physical and virtual - to assist our clients’ study and research at the times most convenient to them in order to achieve their academic goals.

Strategic Priorities

The UTAS strategic plan, Open to Talent, frames the context for the Library’s plan which also aligns with other UTAS strategic plans for Learning and Teaching and Research.

Research

UTAS aspires to be ranked among the top echelon of research-led universities in Australia. The Library is a key element of the organisation and infrastructure that underpins high quality extensive and intensive research by:

• Facilitating access to high quality information resources which attract, support and retain world-class researchers
• Providing targeted services that are aligned to UTAS research priorities and support researchers and their activities
• Providing leadership and support to researchers to increase the accessibility, recognition and citation of their research

Students

UTAS aspires to be a destination of choice, providing a world class education. UTAS Library has a key role in providing a high quality student experience for our increasingly diverse student body by:

• Providing a rich client experience and high quality library services and information resources which support learning and teaching
• Contributing to the attainment of a student’s graduate attributes through the development of information and research skills
• Ensuring Library services and information resources are accessible to all UTAS clients independent of their location and/or mode of study

Community

UTAS Library’s collections are an important resource locally and nationally and include uniquely Tasmanian material.  As the only university library in Tasmania, we have an important role in the local library profession and nationally with other academic libraries.
UTAS Library draws community attention to the University’s rich resources and the role of the Library by:

• Building strong relationships and collaborative partnerships with other library, educational, government, cultural and professional organisations to add value to UTAS Library services
• Preserving uniquely Tasmanian information resources and making them discoverable and accessible by the UTAS and global community
• Supporting UTAS strategies to engage with the Tasmanian community and facilitate meaningful partnerships and collaborations

People and Culture

The Library fosters a supportive, safe and caring environment that is friendly and welcoming for our clients. Library staff have a philosophy of helping, learning and sharing skills and knowledge that is sustained by:

• Fostering a workplace culture that is consultative and which embraces collegial debate and collaboration
• Recruiting, supporting and recognising Library staff who are talented and innovative with the professional expertise to lead the UTAS community in the creation and dissemination of knowledge

Campuses and Infrastructure

The Library is central to campus life, a learning and study space in which our clients connect with each other, exchange information and work together. Client experience of the Library’s physical and virtual spaces is enhanced by:

• Developing exciting and dynamic Library spaces in which to deliver resources and services to our clients
• Providing an online environment that is distinguished by ease of use, equity and ubiquity of access, quality of content and technological innovation

Resources and Planning

High quality scholarly information resources and client-focused services are developed and maintained by:

• Ensuring the Library budget is aligned with UTAS aspirations and the needs of our clients
• Contributing to UTAS’ stewardship and application of resources via effective planning, sound financial management and evidence-based evaluation of the quality and performance of all Library services
