Casual employment in the Library

The University Library employs a number of casuals to assist in carrying out a range of tasks for the different sections. Tasks range from routine reshelving and moving of materials to staffing the front desks, including evening and weekend work, backfilling for staff absences and work on special projects.

Applying for work

Applicants must complete an Application for Casual Work form and return it to the library with a copy of your resume.

Hobart –

Unless otherwise stated, applications will be considered valid for the current calendar year only.

Guidelines

Preference is given to current students of the University and those applicants with an interest in gaining experience in library work and who have, or are working towards completion of, Library/Information Services Certificate IV, Information Technology Certificate IV, or an equivalent qualification.

Work is arranged in blocks of three hours, although this may be modified to fit in with studies for students employed as casuals.

Applicants who have professional library qualifications are also welcome to be listed on the register for relief and project work.

Skills needed for Library work

The following skills are essential to all casual library positions

  1. Ability to perform routine tasks with a high level of accuracy.

  2. Ability to contribute positively to teamwork

  3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

The following skills are desirable

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the provision of client services.

  • Demonstrated competence in computer literacy (such as the International Computer Drivers License) and ability to learn and apply skills in the use of library and standard office software applications.
  • Knowledge of the organization of and the access to information and demonstrated ability to find and retrieve information from tools and resources
