Accessing BAS online
From the Library's Home page at
http://www.utas.edu.au/library/

Click on the Databases link in the left hand menu.

Click on the B in the Alphabetic List and scroll to the Bibliography of Asian Studies.

Click on the title to open the database.
Conducting a search in BAS
Simple Search
- Click on Search
- Type in your search terms Note: The search is not case sensitive, and you can omit punctuation.
- Choose the field in which you would like to search from the drop down menu, choose entire record to search ALL fields or LIMIT your search to the Author, Title, Journal or Subject fields
- Click on Submit Query to get results
To EXPAND your search browse the Subjects hyperlinks in your results list for similar records about that subject.
Advanced Search
Use this feature if you want to REFINE your search or search for words in an unspecified order.
- From the Simple Search window click on Advanced Search on the navigation bar (the horizontal bar located under the database title).
- Enter up to 3 search terms (terms can be phrases)
- Select the field to be searched for each search term from the drop down menu, choose entire record to search ALL fields or LIMIT your search to the Author, Title, Journal or Subject fields
- Select one of the BOOLEAN OPERATOR options AND, NOT and OR from the drop down menu between each search term to refine your search.
How to use BOOLEAN OPERATORS
- Use AND to search for records with both the terms “japanese” and “pottery”.
- Use OR to search for synonyms such as “serpent” or “snake” or variant spellings such as “melaka” or “malacca”.
- Use NOT to exclude specific terms from your search such as “poetry” not “korean”.
Limit your search
- By Date by entering the desired date range OR
- By Item Type by selecting one of the following options from the drop down menu, All, Journal Articles, Books or Analytics (such as chapters in an edited book, anthology or collective work)
- Using Special or “Floating” Subject Headings in the Advanced Search function, choose from Bibliography, Sources, Study and Teaching, Reference that are subset on each subject level
Wildcards
You can expand your search using the Wildcard asterisk (*). Use * at the end of a word to search for variations or plurals of a word e.g. “indonesian politic*” will search for “indonesian politics”, “indonesian political”, “indonesian politicians” etc. Note: Internal wildcards e.g. wom?n or wom*n do not work in BAS.
Revising your Search
- Click on Revise Search in the Navigation Bar. This will bring up your previous search query.
- Clicking on History, also located in the Navigation Bar, will bring up your searches for this session.
Click on the link to the appropriate search query to retrieve the results of that search.
Browsing Bibliography of Asian Studies
Browsing is useful to get a feel for what is in the database, and can prompt ideas for search terms.
Browse by Country-Subject
- Click on Browse the BAS by Country-Subject
- Click on the country you wish to browse then click on a subject.
Browse by Journal
Note: Journal titles are listed ignoring the initial article, such as ‘A’ or ‘The’
- Click on Browse the BAS by Journal Title
- Select from the alphabetical navigation bar
- Select the appropriate Journal title
- Select publication year.
Sorting results
Results can be sorted by selecting one of the options from the Sort drop-down menu on the Bibliographic Records screen. Sort records Alphabetically by author, by Title if there is no author or by ascending or descending date.
Saving email, export records
You can save up to 500 records by
- Clicking on the add to bookbag link for each record then,
- Click on the bookbag link in the Navigation Bar and email the records to your self OR
- Click on the Download Records link and download the records as an html file
