Introduction
The Database of Classical
Bibliography (DCB) is the electronic equivalent of L'Annee
philologique, an international bibliography containing citations
of all known scholarly work published in the areas of ancient Greek
and Latin language and linguistics, Greek and Roman history, literature,
philosophy, art, archaeology, religion, mythology, music, science,
early Christian and patristic texts, numismatics, papyrology and
epigraphy.
DCB contains almost a quarter of a million records published
between the years 1974-1989. The library also has a full set of
L'Annee philologique, from 1924 to date. (CentReference Z

Logging on and Searching
DCB is only available on the Library computer workstations.

Press the Windows Start button and move the mouse cursor up
to Alphabetic listing of Non-web databases. Choose 'D-E' then
'DBClassical Bibliography'. Click on this and the database will
load.

Click on OK in the Sponsors Index Window.

For help in using the DCB, pull down the Help menu from
the tool bar and click on Contents OR ask Library staff.
Index window
The Authors and Works index will be displayed when you log in.
To view all 19 indexes available, click on the arrow to the right
of the index name and scroll down the list.
Some of the important Indexes are:

Authors and Works : Click on an authors name to reveal
a list of works. Click on a title to bring its bibliographic
entry to the main window.

Authors Names Index : Alphabetical list of ancient and
modern authors.

Titles Index : All titles of ancient and modern works.
Titles beginning with articles are alphabetised under the article,
for example The Heroic Paradox is listed under 'T'.

Word List : All the words in DCB printed in Roman characters.
Can be used as a subject index. For example, search for 'chariot',
'hexameter', or 'Mytilene'.

Greek Word List : Allows for searching of Greek words
using Greek characters.

APh Rubrics Index : Includes all classification headings
in L'Annee philologique in alphabetical order.
A drop-down Index Menu will appear when box next to Authors and
Works is ticked.

Select an index by clicking on an index title.

To search an index, scroll and highlight a term from the list
and press Enter. Or;
-
Type the first few letters of your search term to reach that
part of the list quickly, highlight your term and press Enter.
Results are displayed in the Results Window.

Click on a Result from the list and press Enter to display
the full record in the main window

If there is only one Result, the full record is displayed in
the main window.
Search window
The Search Window allows for searching on more than one index.

Open the search window by clicking on the search icon on the
tool-bar, by selecting search from the tools menu.

Each index has a separate box in the search window for entering
search words.

Click on an index name to open the edit box.
-
Terms can be copied directly from the index to the edit box
by using the down-pointing arrow to the right of each edit box
to scroll through the index. Highlight the desired term and
press Enter to copy it to the edit box.

When the search statement has been typed in to the boxes press
search. The number of records will be displayed at the bottom
of the window.

Click on Results to view the list of records in the results
window

Click on a record to bring the full record to the main window.
Combining Search Words
AND : apple and tree will retrieve records containing
both those words.
OR : apple or tree will retrieve all records containing
only one or more of those words.
NOT : apple not tree will retrieve only those records
containing the word apple but not tree.
Truncation
? -for a single character using - e.g.vase? will
find vases, vasen, and all five letter words beginning
with vase, but not vase itself.
*- for multiple characters - e.g. vase* will find
vase, vases, vasen, vasemaker.
Saving results
Printing
Individual entries can be printed from the main window:
-
Either by clicking on the print icon on the tool bar OR by
selecting print from the File menu, OR by pressing CNTL+P on
the keyboard.

To print some or all of a results list from the results window,
highlight the record(s). If no records are highlighted when
print is pressed the whole list will be printed.
Downloading
Records can be downloaded to floppy disc:
-
Select records by clicking on the records with the left mouse
button while holding down the shift key on the keyboard. If
no entries are selected, the entire list will be downloaded.

Click on the floppy disc icon to open a 'save as' dialog box.
Logging off
-
Select exit from the File menu.

In the close window click Yes.
