About Endnote

EndNote is a bibliographic management tool that allows you to save, organise and use references found from a variety of sources. Using EndNote you can:

  • create a database (library) of references
  • search and download references from electronic databases and library catalogues
  • generate citations and bibliographies in specific styles

The University of Tasmania has an institution license for EndNote that allows all current staff and students to use the EndNote software.

Upgrading or Installing EndNote X1

Before installing EndNote X1 check:

System requirements  &  Word processor compatibility (Windows)

System requirements  &  Word processor compatibility  (Macintosh)

Before upgrading:

  • make up a backup copy of your EndNote libraries and associated word processed documents, and save these files onto another drive or server, or external device (such as a USB (thumb) drive)
  • save any output styles or filters you may have modified
  • Read the University of Queensland's excellent notes and tips on Upgrading to EndNote X1

Points to consider before upgrading:

  • EndNote X1 libraries cannot be opened and used with versions of EndNote prior to version 8.
  • If you collaborate with others when writing papers, ensure all collaborators are also using EndNote X1

Download EndNote

Current staff and students of the University of Tasmania are eligible to install EndNote software on University and home computers. You need to locate the EndNote program from the UTAS www site and then extract and unzip these files onto your computer.

Step 1. Locating the EndNote program:

  • Go to: http://uconnect.utas.edu.au/software.htm
  • Scroll down to EndNote
  • Click on the version of EndNote you want to download
  • Verify your status as a current UTas staff or student using your email username and email password
  • If you experience difficulties in downloading from the UTAS www site, load EndNote from a cdrom. The disc is available from your nearest University of Tasmania Library branch or the Cradle Coast Campus Service Desk for UTAS staff and students to borrow.

Step 2. Unzipping and extracting the EndNote program:

Instructions for  Windows EndNote X1.

  • Once downloaded, extract  ALL  files (including the license.dat file) into a folder using the extraction software on your computer
  • If you require authorisation to load software on your computer, then log into the local machine with administrative rights or as a user with program installation privileges
  • Start the EndNote installation program by double clicking the EndNote_X1_installer.msi file to start the EndNote Setup program. The program should now be installed successfully.
  • If you are prompted for a Product Key then you have not extracted the license.dat file into the same location as the other files.  When installing from the zip file without actually extracting them to a folder or their desktop, the installer is unable to locate the license.dat file.

Instructions for Mac EndNote X1.

  • After you have downloaded the software to your desktop
  • Double click on EndNote X1 Installer.dmg
  • Drag and drop EndNote X1 folder into the Applications folder on your computer
  • Double click on the EndNote X1 folder in the Applications folder then double click on the EndNote XI icon to initiate installation.

What is EndNoteWeb?

EndNoteWeb is a simplified version of EndNote, where the references are stored on the Web rather than the user’s desktop.  Access is via free registration.

Note:
UTAS Library is currently monitoring EndNoteWeb and evaluating the level of support to be offered in the future.  Current support is limited to self-help via online tutorials.

How do I access Endnote Web?

First time users:
Register and create your password, via the UTAS Library Web of Knowledge databases, located under “W” on the UTAS Library databases page.  This gives 12 months access.

[Researchers already registered to use the Alert and Save search history features within Web of Knowledge may use their existing Web of Knowledge password to access EndNoteWeb].

After this initial validation, users may login directly via the EndNoteWeb site.
www.myendnoteweb.com/

Who may find endnote Web useful?

  • Undergraduates may find it easy to get started with EndNoteWeb, and a reference list for an essay can be generated with minimal training.  Users may generate a quick bibliography and paste into MSWord without using CWYW.
  • Clients frequently moving between computers may find EndNoteWeb a simple storage option for references.
• Research groups will find the ability to share libraries with colleagues a useful feature of EndNoteWeb.  Those working in teams can manage colleagues' access by setting up either "read only" or "read& edit" sharing options for each library.

What’s the difference? Comparison of EndNoteXI desktop and EndNoteWeb

View a comparison of features:
http://www.myendnoteweb.com/help/en_us/ENW/h_features.htm

  • The library had uploaded the common UTAS modified output styles into EndNoteWeb, and these are available for you to choose.
  • Can I transfer my references between EndNote desktop and EndnoteWeb ? Yes- see also online help for EndnoteXI about import options
  • Customisation is limited in EndnoteWeb.  EndnoteWeb does not allow the ability to modify your own styles or use term lists.

Awareness of potential issues:

  • Access- Although risk is low, if the Thomson EndnoteWeb US site goes down, (eg. for technical or maintenance reasons), libraries may be unavailable during that time.  Transfer to a regular EndNote XI desktop library is recommended before important assignment deadlines approach.
  • Clients leaving the University will lose their access to their EndNoteWeb library 12 months after their last login to Web of Knowledge via the Library site.
  • EndNoteWeb has a separate toolbar in Word- see help for further information.
