About Endnote
EndNote is a bibliographic management tool that allows you to save, organise and use references found from a variety of sources. Using EndNote you can:
- create a database (library) of references
- search and download references from electronic databases and library catalogues
- generate citations and bibliographies in specific styles
The University of Tasmania has an institution license for EndNote that allows all current staff and students to use the EndNote software.

Before installing EndNote X1 check:
System requirements & Word processor compatibility (Windows)
System requirements & Word processor compatibility (Macintosh)
Before upgrading:
- make up a backup copy of your EndNote libraries and associated word processed documents, and save these files onto another drive or server, or external device (such as a USB (thumb) drive)
- save any output styles or filters you may have modified
- Read the University of Queensland's excellent notes and tips on Upgrading to EndNote X1
Points to consider before upgrading:
- EndNote X1 libraries cannot be opened and used with versions of EndNote prior to version 8.
- If you collaborate with others when writing papers, ensure all collaborators are also using EndNote X1

Download EndNote
Current staff and students of the University of Tasmania are eligible to install EndNote software on University and home computers. You need to locate the EndNote program from the UTAS www site and then extract and unzip these files onto your computer.
Step 1. Locating the EndNote program:
- Go to: http://uconnect.utas.edu.au/software.htm
- Scroll down to EndNote
- Click on the version of EndNote you want to download
- Verify your status as a current UTas staff or student using your email username and email password
- If you experience difficulties in downloading from the UTAS www site, load EndNote from a cdrom. The disc is available from your nearest University of Tasmania Library branch or the Cradle Coast Campus Service Desk for UTAS staff and students to borrow.
Step 2. Unzipping and extracting the EndNote program:
Instructions for Windows EndNote X1.
- Once downloaded, extract ALL files (including the license.dat file) into a folder using the extraction software on your computer
- If you require authorisation to load software on your computer, then log into the local machine with administrative rights or as a user with program installation privileges
- Start the EndNote installation program by double clicking the EndNote_X1_installer.msi file to start the EndNote Setup program. The program should now be installed successfully.
- If you are prompted for a Product Key then you have not extracted the license.dat file into the same location as the other files. When installing from the zip file without actually extracting them to a folder or their desktop, the installer is unable to locate the license.dat file.
Instructions for Mac EndNote X1.
- After you have downloaded the software to your desktop
- Double click on EndNote X1 Installer.dmg
- Drag and drop EndNote X1 folder into the Applications folder on your computer
- Double click on the EndNote X1 folder in the Applications folder then double click on the EndNote XI icon to initiate installation.
