Introduction
The International Medieval Bibliography (IMB) is an interdisciplinary bibliography of the Middle Ages, covering Europe, the Middle East and North Africa in the period 400-1500.
The database comprises over 300,000 articles from about 4500 periodicals and 5000 other volumes (conference proceedings, essay collections, Festschriften and exhibition catalogues).

Searching options
Although Search screen looks complex, this merely reflects the many search options available.
- Free Search is for simple keyword searches
- Bibliographical details is used when you already know some publication details of an item or items you are looking for.
- Classification details is where you search for subjects, specific people, places etc.
Note: Most users will want to enter English into the ‘Language of Work’ box
Enter your search terms, then select the Search and show hitlist button at the bottom of the screen.

You can use AND, OR and NOT and the wildcards, * and ? within the search-fields.
You can produce more refined and targeted searches by combining different fields.
You can enter search terms in as many search boxes on the screen as you need. To search for several words or phrases, type in AND, OR, or NOT between them.
- AND retrieves records that contain all of the search terms you have entered.
- OR retrieves records that contain at least one of your search elements.
- Default to AND: For example, a keyword search for greek bible retrieves all records containing the words greek and bible anywhere in the record. Exact phrase searching is not possible in IMB.
Browse-lists can be accessed by clicking the blue buttons on the Search Screen. Entries can be highlighted from any browsable index, then added to relevant search box with the button provided.

Printing and Saving
IMB only has two output options: HTML or Excel spreadsheet format. For most purposes html is easier.

Use the browser’s Save as… command to save your results in html format. The Export to HTML button on the left toolbar will also create a saved html file of your results.
E-mailing
IMB does not yet support emailing of results.
