Accessing ProQuest databases

From the Library's homepage at http://www.utas.edu.au/library

  • Select Databases from the menu on the left.
  • Select P from the alphabetical list of databases.
  • Scroll and select ProQuest from the list of databases.

This takes you to the recommended default Advanced Search page.

Conducting a search

  • Enter a word or phrase in the first search box.
  • Select the field to search using the drop-down menu at the right.

You can search the Article title, Author, Publication title or Subject fields alone. The default Citation and abstract searches for your terms in the title, author, publication and abstract fields.

  • If you wish to combine search terms, select an operator from the drop-down list.

AND means both terms must appear in the records found.
OR means either term must appear in the records found.

  • Enter a word of phrase in the next search box.
  • Select the field to search for the second word or phrase.

Limiting a search

  • Select a Database or Multiple databases from the drop-down menu, to limit your search to one or more databases. The default Multiple Databases will search on them all.
  • Select a Date range from the drop-down menu, to specify a date limitation. The default searches on All dates.
  • Select the check-box for Full text articles only, if you only want to see records which have full text available online.
  • Select the Scholarly journals including peer-reviewed check box, to see only academic records. This will remove newspapers, trade magazines, etc from the search.

Truncation and Wildcards

Truncation - Use an asterisk (*) after a root word to find all the alternative endings
(e.g. behav* would find behaviour, behavior, behavioural, etc.)

Wildcards - Use a question mark (?)to replace a character anywhere within a word.
(e.g. wom?n will find woman and women.)

  • Click on the Search button to start your search

Viewing and Saving Records

  • Click on the article title, or on the Text+Graphics or Full Text icon (if available) to view the citation and abstract - with the full text (if available).
  • Click on the Page Image - PDF icon (if available) to open the article as it appeared in the original journal with page numbers.
  • Click on the buttons at the top of the Article View page to Print or Email the article details.

Marking and Saving Records

  • Mark records by clicking in the check-box to the left of the record.
  • Click on the Marked List tab at the top of the page to display the marked records list.
  • The Marked List page has buttons to Print or Email your list or export the records to reference management software such as EndNote.
  • You can set up an Alert for ProQuest to run your search and email details of new records.
