Iron Baron

The Eden Holme on Hebe Reef, 1907 (AOT, PH30/1/2484)

Iron Baron, bulk carrier of 37,557 gross tons, became Tasmania's largest-ever shipwreck after hitting the Hebe Reef at Tamar Heads on 10 July 1995. Although soon refloated, the vessel's hull was badly holed and leaking oil wrought havoc with marine life. It was finally decided to scuttle the vessel west of the Furneaux Group, which was done on 30 July. The Hebe Reef is a well-known obstacle to shipping entering the Tamar, having claimed at least ten other vessels since the ship Hebe from India hit it in 1808. Others have included the barques Phillip Oakden in 1851 and Eden Holme in 1907, and the steamer Esk on 21 April 1886 while under the command of Captain JW Evans (later premier of Tasmania).
