Huon Pine Carvings
Midwood created a series of Huon Pine carvings of caricatures based either on real life characters or imaginary ones. Some of these were shown at the Arts and Crafts Exhibitions held at the new Custom House and General Post Office, Hobart in 1903 and 1904 (Weekly Courier, 19 September 1903; Tasmanian Mail, 12 Nov 1904). He also designed the certificate of awards made at the Exhibitions.
Six of his carvings are currently on display at Narryna Heritage Museum, Hampton Road, Battery Point, from their collection donated to them by the artist’s son Mr. E. Midwood. One depicts a dancing minstrel which may have been inspired by Midwood’s tour of America as guitarist and banjo player with a travelling musical show in the 1870s. |
