All completing Higher Degree Research students must complete the UTAS Thesis Access Form [105.4KB] when they submit the electronic copy of their thesis to the Graduate Research Office. This access provides an opportunity for students to promote their research globally via the Library Repository. Theses will be available as open-access files unless an embargo period is applied.
1. Complete the Thesis Access Form [105.4KB]
Note: the form states that you must make sure you have the rights necessary to make the thesis openly accessible. If you have copyright material in your thesis for which you do not have the right to use (eg: images, tables, graphs, substantial amounts of text etc. copied from other works) you must either:
a. obtain permission to include that material, or
b. omit it from the electronic version of your thesis. If you omit copyright material include a notation where material has been removed to help the reader understand your thesis.
c.If you have any questions, please contact Graduate Research Office (03) 6226 8559.
2. Form Submission
Scan and send and electronic copy of the signed Thesis Access form to Graduate Research Office or deliver/post the paper copy to Graduate Research Office - Private Bag 105 Hobart TAS 7001 or 301 Sandy Bay Rd, Sandy Bay Campus ph. (03) 6226 8559.The form must accompany the thesis file(s). In most cases candidates will finalise this process as part of their ‘checklist’ for completion
3. File Submission
Word files must be converted to PDF format. For theses with internal links, internal navigation and/or animations formats such as HTML or XML are acceptable. Send file to either Graduate Research Office or burn it to CD and deliver/post it to Graduate Research Office - Private Bag 105 Hobart TAS 7001 or 301 Sandy Bay Rd, Sandy Bay Campus ph. (03) 6226 8559. The Thesis Access Form [105.4KB] must accompany the file(s). In most cases candidates will finalise this process as part of their ‘checklist’ for completion.
4. File Size
A. If your thesis does not exceed 5 MB then create two files as follows:
1. Create one file which contains all material up to and including the table of contents. Name this file front.pdf, front.html etc (ensuring the file is not copy protected).
2. Create another file containing the entire thesis including the front matter. Name this whole.pdf, whole.html etc
B. If your thesis exceeds 5 MB then create files as follows:
1. Create one file which contains all material up to and including the table of contents. Name this file front.pdf (ensuring this file is not copy protected).
2. Create several other files comprising the chapters or sections or other logical divisions within the thesis and name them accordingly, such as:
Chapter1-6.pdf, Chapter7-14.pdf, or
Section1.pdf, Section2.pdf, Section3.pdf, Section4.pdf, Appendix.pdf and so on.
5. File Optimisation
Where possible your file(s) should be saved as Optimal Character Recognition (OCR) format. This ensures that the search engines can access and ‘read’ the text in your thesis. It also keeps file sizes smaller. If your thesis contains graphics and images for which their quality and resolution is important then you may need to save your file as image (not OCR) files. This will increase the file size substantially and should be avoided where possible.
This provides an opportunity for UTAS past graduates who have not had the opportunity to deposit and electronic copy of their thesis to promote their research globally via the Library Repository.
