Where do I start my research?

A good way to start your research is to define your topic by using subject dictionaries and to find background information in encyclopaedias such as:

To find books on your subject you can: 

Search the  Library Catalogue using  the 'subject keyword' or 'general keyword' option

How do I find journal articles?

The Library holds journals in print and electronic formats. The best way to access articles in these journals is by using the databases listed below. When you find an article you want to read, use the Library Catalogue and the E-journals list to see if we hold a print copy or have access to the electronic copy in full-text. Some databases listed will have direct links to the full-text article.

Cold Regions Bibliography Project The Antarctic Bibliography and the Bibliography on Cold Regions Science and Technology provide coverage of  Antarctic research and exploration, cold regions engineering and physical science information

Oceanic Abstracts  

Comprehensive in its coverage of living and non-living resources, meteorology and geology, plus environmental, technological, and legislative topics. Some overlap with ASFA. 1981+

References to works published from 1602 -  compliments COLD. A subset of SPRILIB the bibliographic database of the Scott Polar research Institute

References to academic journal articles in all subject areas. Each reference has links to articles cited by and citing that reference as well as related articles. 1945+

Where does CrossSearch fit in?

CrossSearch provides a single entry point for our electronic resources including library catalogues, databases, eJournal collections, selected websites and more. Most resources can be searched with the CrossSearch interface, with the capacity to search up to eight simultaneously.    Each of the resources has links to its original interface. CrossSearch gives you access to resources recommended by our librarians within a specific subject category, or you may browse alphabetically for individual resources.   

Other features include the ability to connect (via the FindIt/SFX button) to loads of full-text articles, compatibility with EndNote, and the capacity to customise, organise and group your favourite resources for regular searching. Comprehensive list of organizations concerned with the polar and cold regions. Includes the web page, address, telephone or fax number of Arctic and Antarctic bodies.

Oceanography Virtual Library

OceanPortal A directory of ocean data and information related web sites. Its objective is to help scientists and other ocean experts in locating such data & information.

International Polar Year The International Polar Year is a large scientific programme focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009

Informative metasite on La Nina - FAQ's, ocean temperature conditions, future climate patterns and La Nina impacts.

CRREL

The Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory site has technical reports and fact sheets on a range of topics.

New Zealand's involvement in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

Australian Antarctic Division An agency of the Department of the Environment and Heritage, leading Australia's Antarctic Program.

The Australian Meteorological & Oceanographic Society

Provides a forum for people with an interest in meteorology and oceanography.

British Antarctic Survey

The BAS is responsible for almost all of the British Government's scientific research in the Antarctic, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands.

Byrd Polar Research Centre Scientists at the Centre are reconstructing past climates by studying chemical records preserved in ice cores collected from glaciers in Greenland, China, Peru and Antarctica.
International Polar Heritage Committee Aim of the IPHC is to promote the preservation of human heritage in polar regions and to provide opportunities for collaboration by those working in this field.

CiteSeer is a scientific literature digital library that aims to improve the dissemination and feedback of scientific literature. Contains an extensive citation cross reference.

Directory of Open Access Journals

The aim of the Directory of Open Access Journals is to increase the visibility and ease of use of open access, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.

Google Scholar

A search engine  for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research.

OAIster

This site provides access to institutional archives. A collection of freely available, previously difficult-to-access, academically-oriented digital resources.

Scirus

A comprehensive science-specific search engine. Find scientific, scholarly, technical and medical data from the Web, reports and journal articles.

UTas Eprints

A digital archive providing full-text access to publications by current University of Tasmania staff and higher degree students including journal articles, books, conference papers and theses.


How do I cite and manage my information resources?

Below are guides to citation styles and other aspects of presentation. The citation styles that you use will depend on the policies of the schools that you are studying in and specific publications. 

Personal bibliographic software (for example, EndNote) can be used to manage your sources when undertaking in-depth research. The Library provides training in EndNote for honours students, postgraduates and staff.
