Introduction:

Librarianship  through the University of Tasmania is a post graduate course  presently made up with a number of core subjects in conjunction with Edith Cowan University (ECU).

Where do I start my research?

A good way to start your research is to define your topic by using subject dictionaries and to find background information in encyclopaedias such as:

How do I find books on my subject?

To find books on your subject you can: 

search the  Library Catalogue using  the 'subject keyword' or 'general keyword' option. 
OR
browse the bookshelves using these call numbers: (most Education books are held in Launceston and can be ordered through interlibrary loans.)

How do I find journal articles?

The Library holds journals in print and electronic formats. The best way to access articles in these journals is by using the [print indexes and] databases listed below. When you find an article you want to read, use the Library Catalogue and the E-journals list to see if we hold a print copy or have access to the electronic copy in full-text. Some databases listed will have direct links to the full-text article.

Databases:

ALISA

Australian Library and Information Science Abstracts. Comprehensive subject coverage includes library science, information science, information technology, and archives.

LISTA Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts,(LISTA) indexes more than 600 periodicals, plus books, research reports and proceedings. Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. Coverage in the database extends back as far as the mid-1960s.  (Links to fulltext)

ABI/Inform Global via ProQuest

Business, Economics, Finance, Computers - some full-text of education.   Lots of Full text.

ERIC

The Education Resources Information Centre database. It indexes articles, research reports, reviews, conference papers, bibliographies and course descriptions on all aspects of education.  Full-text of ERIC Digests are now available on the Web.

INSPEC

GIS, physics, and electrical engineering, computers.

Predominately Australian literature in social sciences, humanities and public affairs, including economic, social, cultural, legal and political aspects.

Business Source Premier via Ebsco Large fulltext business database including management, marketing, information systems.

Citation database of core academic journals in all subjects. Incorporates Science Citation Index. 1990+ 

Current contents

Indexes core academic journals in all subjects. Includes Alerting service. 1993+

ProQuest

Good starting point to find some full-text journal articles.  Includes academic journal articles,  newspapers, magazines and book reviews in all subjects.

ScienceDirect

Cross-disciplinary database indexing and abstracting hundreds of academic sources published by  Elsevier.  Includes many library and information science journals.  Subscribed full-text journals available 1995+.

How do I cite and manage my information resources

Below are guides to citation styles and other aspects of presentation. The citation styles that you use will depend on the policies of the schools that you are studying in and specific publications. The Library provides training in EndNote software.
