How do I find journal articles?

The Library holds journals in print and electronic formats. The best way to access articles in these journals is by using the databases listed below. When you find an article you want to read,

use the Library Catalogue and the E-journals list to see if we hold a print copy or have access to the electronic copy in full-text. Some databases listed will have direct links to the full-text article.

Marine Science Databases | Multi-discipline databases | Related  Databases

Marine Science Databases

ASFA

Covers the science, technology and management of marine, freshwater and estuarine environments and organisms. Also includes marine biology, ecology, fisheries, aquaculture, oceanography and limnology. 1978+

Biological Sciences

References to articles and other literature on biology including biotechnology, zoology and ecology. 1982+

Oceanic Abstracts Oceanic Abstracts indexes literature that relates to marine and brackish water environments from 1981 onwards.  These abstracts concentrate on marine biology and physical oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture, meteorology, geology, and non living resources

Multi-discipline Databases:

CrossSearch You can select multiple databases, to search simultaneously.  This may be a good way to start your searching as it will help to identify which databases index the literature on your topic.  To do a comprehensive literature search, we recommend searching individual databases.

Web of Science

References to academic journal articles in all subject areas. Each reference has links to articles cited by and citing that reference as well as related articles. 1986+

Scopus A multi-disciplinary citation database, indexing peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and technical reports.

ProQuest Science Journals

Includes references to and  some full-text articles from over 490 journals, covering topics back to 1986 relating to physics, engineering, biology, astronomy, earth science, chemistry and more.

CSA Databases

Select and search individual or multiple CSA databases, covering areas including biological, plant, oceanographic, and aquatic sciences.

Related Databases:

Arctic & Antarctic regions (COLD)

References to literature  from 1600's onwards in all aspects of the Arctic, Antarctic and alpine regions

Informit

A suite of databases containing references to Australian publications in a variety of areas. For example: Endanger - an index to literature on threatened flora and fauna; Environmental Abstracts; Reef - with literature about the Great Barrier Reef, marine park management, coral reef ecology, marine biology etc; Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) - covering natural resource management

GeoBase

References to articles in geography, ecology, natural resource management. 1990+

Scifinder Scholar

References to articles and patents on broad range of chemistry and medical topics, including chemical aspects of biology. Learn more about content...  Available via the web - Register here or sign-in now.

Which journals should I read and where should I publish?

By searching on keywords in the databases above, you will identify journals that publish articles relevant to your research.  Other peer-reviewed journals may be identified for reading and/or publishing from these sources:

Ulrich's Periodicals Directory A directory of journals within broad subject areas and specific disciplines, identifying peer-reviewed sources.
Journal Citation Reports A source of quantitative data (Impact Factors) about journals, identifying those which are high impact within a subject grouping

Useful Web Sites

Ocean Data sites Professional organisations and Government sites

Ocean Data sites:

ARGO

A global array of 3,000 free-drifting profiling floats that measures the temperature and salinity of the upper 2000 m of the ocean, allowing continuous monitoring of the temperature, salinity, and velocity of the upper ocean. The Argo array is part of the Global Climate Observing System/Global Ocean Observing System GCOS/ GOOS).

Ocean Data view A software package for the interactive exploration, analysis and visualization of oceanographic and other geo-referenced profile or sequence data
CLIVAR CLIVAR is the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) project that addresses Climate Variability and Predictability, with a particular focus on the role of ocean-atmosphere interactions in climate. It works closely with its companion WCRP projects on issues such as the role of the land surface, snow and ice and the role of stratospheric processes in climate.

World Ocean CIrculation Experiment (WOCE) Global Data Resource

Part of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) which used resources from nearly 30 countries to make unprecedented in-situ and satellite observations of the global ocean between 1990 and 1998

Tasmanian Partnership for Advanced Computing (TPAC) Located at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, and partners with the University of Tasmania, CSIRO Marine & Atmospheric Research, the Australian Antarctic Division, Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC), Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre, and the Australian Maritime College. Its aim is to develop numerical models for high performance computers with reference to the oceans, atmosphere, Antarctic Ice Sheet and the environment.

Professional organisations and Government sites:

Australian Institute of Marine Science

Established by the Commonwealth government to support research for the sustainable use and protection of the marine environment.

Australian Marine Sciences Association

National non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting marine science and coordinating discussion and debate of marine issues in Australia.

Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society An independent Australian society that supports and fosters interest in meteorology, oceanography and other related sciences

American Geophysical Union

A non-profit scientific organization with an active community of over 45,000 scientists from 140 countries; Its focus is on the organization and dissemination of scientific information atmospheric and ocean sciences; solid-Earth sciences; hydrologic sciences; and space sciences.

International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans (IAPSO) IAPSO has the prime goal of "promoting the study of scientific problems relating to the oceans and the interactions taking places at the sea floor, coastal, and atmospheric boundaries insofar as such research is conducted by the use of mathematics, physics, and chemistry."

How do I cite and manage my information resources?

Below are guides to citation styles and other aspects of presentation. The citation styles that you use will depend on the policies of the schools in which you are studying and specific publications to which you are submitting.

Personal bibliographic software can be purchased (and sometimes is available in schools) to manage your sources when undertaking in-depth research. The Library provides training and support in EndNote.

Author-Date (Harvard) A brief guide to the Harvard style, prepared by the UTAS Library.
