About this guide

This guide contains information about general newspapers in the Library's collection. It also covers indexes to newspapers, clipping services, and Internet resources.

Most newspapers are first received in standard paper format, which is eventually replaced by microfilm. In Hobart, newspapers on microfilm  are located in the Morris Miller Library.

Some newspapers donated to the Library are kept only for a short period of time and there is no record of what has been received.

Historical newspapers

Australian Newspapers is a project of the National Library of Australia. It will digitize the following Australian newspapers from 1803 - 1954. Work is in progress. These titles will be digitized

Indexes to newspapers

ANZ Reference Centre :  Fulltext Australian and N.Z. newspapers, magazines; company information and regional news.  Last 5-6 years-present.
Includes The Age, The Australian, The Mercury, Sydney Morning Herald, Advertiser, Courier Mail, Bulletin with Newsweek and BRW.

The Tasmanian index  at the State Library contains references to articles about Tasmania from 1965 onwards in a card index. The Tasmanian index is also available electronically from the State Library's catalogue - it includes entries from 1 July 1994 onwards, and selected references from the card index. All Tasmanian newspapers and magazines are indexed. Ask at the Information Desk in the Library for more information about this service.

The Library's Web page gives links to databases which selectively index Australian newspapers  e.g. APA-FT  and AUSCHRON (Chronology of Australian Historic and Current Events) .

Media Scan indexes a number of  major Australian newspapers, including Age, Australian and  Sydney Morning Herald.  Not all articles are indexed, but there is good coverage of Australian and international news, "contentious" issues, science, technology and education. Coverage begins from 1991 for some titles

News Store provides a searchable index of Fairfax newspapers including the Age, Sun Herald, and the Sydney Morning Herald.

Newstext covers over 150 News Corporation newspapers, including the Australian, the Mercury, Adelaide Advertiser, and Brisbane Courier Mail.  This is a user-pays site, but some free sample searching is available.

Indexes to specific newspapers:
The Library holds some indexes to specific newspapers. Indexes provide a way of identifying stories on particular topics, events, or people.

Infoquick at the State Library of N.S.W. is a comprehensive index to articles about Australia published in the Sydney Morning Herald from 1988 onwards. 

A useful service for pinpointing Australian events is AUSCHRON (Chronology of Australian Historic and Current Events)  It includes references to specific newspaper articles from The Age, The Australian and daily state newspapers.

Other newspaper services

Art and Architecture clippings files
The Carington Smith (Art) Library in Hobart has a considerable collection of newspaper clippings taken from The Mercury, The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age since 1981. Subjects covered include art, with an emphasis on Tasmanian art and artists, and some local architecture.

A selection of clippings from major State newspapers, The Australian, Australian Financial Review, National Times, Nation Review and other Australian newspapers.  Subjects include government, parliamentary reform, political parties, trade unions, local government, elections, state finance  and a range of other topics such as housing, immigration, health, mass media, and civil liberties. 

Copying newspapers

Microfilm newspapers can be viewed and printed (using your CAPS account) in the Launceston and Morris Miller libraries. If help is required in photocopying from paper copies, please ask at the Service or Information Desk. 

Internet resources

Newspapers on the Internet

Many newspaper publishers offer an online service via the Internet. In many cases, only selections from the newspapers are made available and in some cases you need to pay a subscription to gain access. However, there are some daily newspapers which provide the full-text of their news stories free, with very little time lag.

AJR NewsLink is another good source for obtaining access to the text of a wide range of American and international newspapers.

A Journalist's Guide to the Internet has links to newspapers and major news outlets. 

Australian Newspapers Online is a portal to Australian newspapers including metropolitan dailies, regional and suburban online newspapers, as well as those with only promotional sites.

News services on the Internet

Many news services are available through the World Wide Web. These sites usually provide full news coverage of current events with links to other relevant web resources. Many sites have a searchable archive.
