Where do I start my research?

A good way to start your research is to define your topic by using subject dictionaries and to find background information in encyclopaedias such as:

How do I find journal articles?

The Library holds journals in print and electronic formats. The best way to access articles in these journals is by using the [print indexes and] databases listed below. When you find an article you want to read, use the Library Catalogue and the E-journals list to see if we hold a print copy or have access to the electronic copy in full-text. Some databases listed will have direct links to the full-text article.

Covers research on social work, human services and related areas including social welfare, social policy, and community development. 1980+
CSA Help

AUSSTATS

Australian Bureau of Statistics data available for downloading into spreadsheets 1985+
Some Datasets require SuperTable software. This software is available free from the Space-Time Research Web site

ProQuest

Good starting point to find some full-text journal articles. Includes references to and  some full-text articles of popular and academic journal articles.

Citation database of core academic journals in all subjects. Incorporates Science Citation Index. 1990+

Scopus

Scopus provides access to 14,000 peer-reviewed journals from more than 4,00 international publishers. The records from 1996 include references and there are some full text links.

JSTOR The JSTOR database is unique because it offers access to the full text of core scholarly journals from the first issues, many of which date from the 1800s. JSTOR is not a current issues database. There is a gap from 1-5 years between the most recently publishes issue and the contents in JSTOR.

Australian Institute for Health and Welfare

Australia's national agency for health and welfare statistics and information.  The site contains many full text publications including Australia's Health and Australia's Welfare.

Australian Institute of Family Studies

AIFS is a Commonwealth government research and information agency that promotes the identification and understanding of factors affecting marital and family stability in Australia.  Publications include Family Matters - which (apart from the most recent 3 issues) is available full text from the web site.

Department of Family and Community Services

This department is responsible for a broad range of social policy issues including income support, housing policy, community support, disability services, child care services, family payments, child support and family relationships.

Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care

This site includes policy information, media releases, and other documentation relating to Australian health services.  It includes topics such as women's health, aged care, mental health, AIDS/HIV, alcohol and drugs.

Australian Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous  Affairs

This site includes fact sheets, statistics, media releases, and other documentation relating to topics such as citizenship, multiculturalism, immigration, and refugees.

Office of the Status of Women

The Office of the Status of Women is a policy advisory unit concerned with bringing women's issues into the mainstream.  The site includes media releases, ministerial speeches and other material relating to topics such as women's economic security, women's health, and violence against women.

Australian Council of Social Service

The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) is the national peak council of the community welfare sector in Australia.  Major publications are Impact and The Australian Journal of Social Issues.

Australian Association of Social Workers

The AASW is the professional representative body of social workers in Australia.

How do I cite and manage my information resources

Below are guides to citation styles and other aspects of presentation. The citation styles that you use will depend on the policies of the schools that you are studying in and specific publications. Personal bibliographic software can be purchased (and sometimes available in schools) to manage your sources when undertaking in-depth research. The Library provides training in EndNote.
