Richard Dearden's contribution to Teaching and Learning recognised
Congratulations to Richard Dearden on his Carrick Institute Citation Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.
Richard’s citation reads "For leadership in developing partnerships between library and faculty to promote information literacy skills. These skills help students to become independent lifelong learners".
Richard has a commitment to the development of lifelong learning skills in students, and has developed this in conjunction with academic staff over a number of years. Promoting Research Support

Chris Evans, as Science Librarian, has a library-wide responsibility to coordinate library support for researchers at UTAS. To this end, a group of liaison librarians has formed, representing the interests of each of the faculties. So far this year, activities of this group, or individual members, have included:
-
establishment of a "welcome" letter to new PG candidates (copied to supervisors)
-
learning about the Research Quality Framework (RQF), as well as the UK RAE and NZ PBRF in order to be informed about the library's potential role in guiding researchers to bibliometric data
-
reviewing the content and format of generic Postgrad/Staff workshops
-
becoming familiar with and promoting institutional repositories (such as our own ePrints)
-
consultation with the Faculty of Arts researchers about their library needs
Liaison librarians look forward to providing ongoing support with literature searching for your research projects, as well as offering advice about evaluating and increasing your research impact.

'Imaging the Thylacine - from trap to laboratory'
Exhibition in the Morris Miller Library Foyer
July - mid-September 2006.
For two hundred years, visual images of the extinct thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) have played an important role in influencing attitudes and actions toward the species and suggesting how the animal is perceived.
This exhibition focuses on images in zoological works, commercial and official sites, and in the scientific and popular imagination. Early illustrations of the thylacine had a crucial role in the extermination of the species. In Tasmania today, a thylacine logo or emblem carries different, but equally powerful and persuasive, political and commercial messages. Meanwhile, technoscience attempts to create the ultimate representation a walking, stalking thylacine.
http://www.utas.edu.au/library/whatnew/thylacine.html
'Imaging the Thylacine: from trap to laboratory' includes rare books, prints, the University mace, original
photographs, a power point presentation showing 80 thylacine images, commercial and official
logos which use the thylacine, cartoons, and much more...

Upgrade to EndNote 9

The Library will be providing access to EndNote 9 soon! All of our public machines will be upgraded to the newer version of the software in August 2006.
EndNote 9 will provide many more Reference Types, including common electronic reference types such as electronic journal articles and newspapers.
There are backward compatibility issues with the EndNote 9. Once you have converted your data to EndNote 9 you cannot easily go back to using a previous version of EndNote. If you have EndNote on your own private machine and are unsure if you should upgrade please contact your Liaison Librarian for guidance.
If you are using a Mac or collaborating with others already using EndNote 9 you may need to upgrade earlier, please contact your Liaison Librarian or the Service Desk.
Never used EndNote before?
EndNote is a bibliographic management tool that allows you to save, organise and use references found from a variety of sources. Using EndNote you can:
-
create a database (library) of references
-
search and download references from electronic databases and library catalogues
-
generate citations and bibliographies in specific styles
The Library offers Introductory EndNote Workshops.
For workshop details:

Document Delivery
During 2005 we supplied 3,629 loan items from other libraries to our eligible UTAS clients. This compares with 3,578 loan items supplied in 2004. This slight 1% increase continues to highlight the gaps in our monograph collection which we are seeking to address through our additional acquisition funding which began last year.
Copies received from outside sources, mainly journal articles, totalled 10,464 in 2005. In 2004 we obtained 12,256 copies. This 15% decrease reflects the significant growth in the availability of electronic journals at UTAS over the last couple of years. Many journal titles are now purchased as part of a larger package. All UTAS clients now have access to over 20,000 electronic journal titles.
Update on VDX – our new DD/ILL management system
Later this month an OCLC Pica representative is visiting the Library to discuss options we will be using for configuring our VDX server. After this occurs the new system will be installed and tested.

Staff activity
Dr Di Hodge gave a paper at the 7th International Conference of the Australasian Children's Literature Association for Research (http://www.aclar.org.au/). The conference was held in Melbourne at the city campus of the Australian Catholic University. Most delegates were from Australia and New Zealand but there were also delegates from China, Japan and America. Most of those attending were academics from English or Education faculties, including a PhD student from the UTas School of English. Other Librarians included Juliet O'Connor the Children's Literature Research Librarian from the State Library of Victoria and Karen Nelson Hoyle, Curator of the Children's Literature Research Collection at the University of Minnesota Libraries, an amazing collection of original artwork, correspondence, drafts and other memorabilia of famous children's authors. Di’s paper was called Teenage Chick Lit: Smart, witty and literate as hell?
Launceston Campus Library Learning Hub
Changes are always afoot at the University of Tasmania, and the Library is no different. We are always trying to find new ways to improve the service to the clients of the Library.
Changes that have occurred in 2006:
-
Log In times to the computers have been improved.
-
New 43 pages per minute CAPS printer has been installed to replace the Copier/Printer. This should improve the quality and speed of printing.
-
A very fast A3 24bit colour scanner has been installed. This should be a great boon to all the Environmental Design and Architectural Students.
-
New A4 Colour Laser Printer has been added to the Hub, and we are able to offer printing for the low price of 50 cents per page.
-
The Computers of the Learning Hub have been upgraded to Windows XP, which will allow students to Burn CDs.
Other Services
-
We still have a Coin Machine and Self-Serve EFTPOS (Debit Cards Only ) for placing money on your CAPS account or you may choose to do this at the front desk, where one of our staff will assist you with your transaction.
-
Email and Novell Passwords can still be obtained and reset at the Front Desk and assistance with your IT queries is also available.
-
UANA wireless and wired access is also available in the Learning Hub and staff will assist you in setting your machine up for this.
-
You can still book Group rooms 1 & 2 for your study needs at the front desk, as well as ad hoc use of e-Learning Room 2 when available.

Service Desk
As a result of the Service Desk Review in 2005, from the start of semester 2 the Service Desk phone and email service will be handled by Information Technology Resources. The "Service Desk" is still an entity, but the "virtual Service Desk" is run from ITR, with the physical Service Desks available in the Morris Miller and Launceston Campus libraries as usual. The Library client service desks in Morris Miller and Launceston will continue to provide basic library, CALT and IT support for staff and students. There is also face-to-face advanced IT support available in the Morris Miller and Launceston libraries. In semester 2 this will still be provided by Library staff - Carlos and Tony in Morris Miller and Mark and Steve in Launceston.
During semester 2, 2006 basic IT and CALT support will be rolled out to the other branch libraries - Art, Law, Clinical, Science and Music. We hope that this service will be available from October 2006.

Web of Science

Backfiles - 1900-1944
ISI have given us 3 months free access to the remaining backfiles of Web of Science - 1900-1944. We currently have access back to 1945. Access to these backfiles will be available until the 30 th September.
New search features
ISI have recently improved their topic search results with the aim of providing better results when entering multiple search terms. The major change to searching is that phrase searching is no longer implied. This means that the Boolean operator ‘AND’ is automatically placed between words. Quotation marks must now be used to search an exact phrase. The use of wildcard characters and Boolean search operators is still permitted. These changes apply to all Web of Knowledge databases.
Author Finder
The new Author Finder function is useful for differentiating between authors who share names and initials. A quick, four-step process has been designed to help you go through an author search and locate the correct author you are searching for.
The four steps are:
-
Enter a name – only the last name is required
-
Select Author Variant (if appropriate)
-
Select Subject Category
-
Select Institution
