Client Services Desk in the Morris Miller Library |
All Libraries have a Client Services Desk for loans services, basic IT and help with finding information for your assignments and study. If you have an enquiry, please ask any of our staff. If the staff member you ask can’t help you, they can refer you to someone who can, or get back to you. Starting at university for the first time is exciting, but it can also be a little daunting, so please make use of us to help smooth your way into university life.
Many first year courses include introductions to using information – from finding required reading in our electronic and print Reserve Collections to finding journal articles to write assignments. If you miss out on these introductions, please be sure to ask for help at the Client Services Desk when you need it.
Quaker Life in Tasmania
On Thursday 15 th February we launched the book: Quaker life in Tasmania written by Professor Michael Bennett with graphic design by Librarian, Gill Ward. Professor Gail Hart and Mr Dan Sprod, the University Librarian who arranged the transfer of material from the Society of Friends to UTAS Library in 1971, spoke at the launch. 50 invited guests enjoyed the celebration. Thanks to all those who helped prepare for the launch. We have sold more than 400 copies of the book.

Morris Miller Exhibition
The Morris Miller Library on Sandy Bay campus was named after the former Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Morris Miller. This was in recognition for his commitment to developing the Library collection and services while honorary University Librarian, 1913 to 1945. Not only did Morris Miller have these important roles, but he was also the Professor of Philosophy and Psychology, chaired the Tasmanian State Government Mental Deficiency Board, and produced the first comprehensive bibliography of Australian Literature. Find out more about this accomplished Tasmanian in the exhibition in the Morris Miller Library.

Liaison Librarians, together with ePrints staff, have started promoting ePrints to the University's research community and it has been well received.
Already:
All 27 researchers in the Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits have uploaded 4 papers each and plans are now underway to upload their theses.
Computing is well represented in ePrints (thanks to Prof Sale)
Life sciences now represent about one third of the repository items. A successful seminar held for Life Sciences staff in January explained the value and power of ePrints to staff.
Recent talks and sessions have demonstrated that there is a lot of interest in ePrints with Information Systems, TILES, Asian Studies and The Innovation Research Centre preparing to upload items on a School/Centre basis like CODES.
For more information on UTas ePrints, please contact Lynn Davies (1895) or Lynn.Davies@utas.edu.au or your School's Liaison Librarian.
During the next few weeks, work will start on the redevelopment and refurbishment of level one of the Morris Miller building. This programme will facilitate the relocation of the Collection Management Unit (Acquisitions, Cataloguing, Binding and Processing activities) to the northern end of the building and the relocation of CALT, from two areas elsewhere in the building, to a new dedicated area at the southern end of level one with easy stair access.

Serials boxed for the store, Level 1 Morris Miller Library |
Collections, formerly housed in the northern wing of level one, have been relocated elsewhere in the Morris Miller building or have been temporarily located at the Library's off-site store (with a regular collection service in place for their use by Library clients)
Work is expected to begin soon, with demolition of some walls and old office workspace necessary in the northern wing. Once refurbishment of the northern wing is completed, CMU staff and work facilities will move in-- thus vacating the southern end for refurbishment for CALT.
The redevelopment of level one also includes updated staff facilities (un-modernised since 1960) and will provide up-to-date facilities for staff meetings and training. The year will be somewhat disruptive for Library staff, but Library users should not be inconvenienced.
This refurbishment is part of the Library’s capital master plan that will progressively improve facilities in Hobart and Launceston.
Morning tea for Librarianship students
On Tuesday 27th Feburary the Library hosted a morning tea for Librarianship students from the School of Information Systems. It was a great opportunity for Librarians and students to meet and to talk about the profession and opportunities. It was also timely to have Prof. Morris Miller's life achievements on display - a great role model for Librarians.

Work is continuing on our new Document Delivery/ILL requesting system. We have already made some changes to what is called the ZPortal. This is the interface through which you will place your requests.
We are continuing discussion with the vendor over some outstanding issues. We need to ensure that our system is communicating correctly with other potential supplier systems.
A ‘User Guide’ to the system is currently being developed and demonstrations of the ZPortal are being arranged with Liaison Librarians.
You will have opportunities to view the ZPortal before we launch the new system.
We look forward to being able to announce a ‘go live’ date in the coming weeks.

Katrina Dewis, Clinical Library team - Liaison Librarian |
Hi my name is Katrina Dewis and I have recently joined the Clinical library team as a liaison librarian. I am the librarian responsible for the School of Pharmacy, Paramedic Studies and I will also be assisting Ian with Medicine. Ian and I have been busy presenting information skills classes to research staff and students. These will continue as more students commence their academic year.
In other staff news Irene is on leave for approximately six weeks. Mariola will be working full time as our Senior Library Officer while Irene is away.
The Clinical library has been open for semester hours since the 5th of February. We are open Monday to Thursday 8.30am-8pm, Friday 8.30am-6pm and Saturday and Sunday 1pm-5pm.
I look forward to meeting students and staff over the coming weeks.
It is going to be a very busy year for Cradle Coast campus as the building work is well under way to house new facilities

The Learning Hub will be an exciting addition to the services offered by the Library and will provide the growing number of students and staff greater access to the electronic resources on offer. The Hub will be a beautiful new space with a variety of study spaces and up-to-date technology to enhance the teaching, learning and research that takes place.
The staff in the Cradle Coast Information Resources area includes two client support officers, Darryl Restall and Gordon Farquhar, and the Librarian and Learning Skills Advisor, Cathy Hartigan.
Part of Cathy’s role is to work closely with the Librarians and services on the other campuses to ensure the resource needs of students and academic staff is met here on Cradle Coast.
The campus is seeing some exciting developments including the Bachelor of Regional Resource Management, the establishment of the Institute for Regional Development and an expansion of courses and student enrolments in a number of schools and faculties.
It is an interesting challenge for the University Library to meet the diverse needs of a unique campus such as Cradle Coast.
This year the Launceston Campus Library staff have 2 Liaison Librarians to replace. This will take some time, but in the meantime we are fortunate to be providing relevant training for some new librarians who are working as casuals. So you will see some new faces, which is good!
Susan Bell, Ian Bollard and Cherie Holmes are stepping in and as multi-skilled staff are doing a wonderful job. Ian Bollard, Nursing liaison, is travelling to Sydney to talk to first year nursing students located there. Cherie Holmes is assisting Architecture in acclimatizing to using a Learning Hub facility, jointly with the School of Visual and Performing Arts. This will be an exciting year for Launceston with the extension of the University presence in the Inveresk precinct and preparing for the unification with the Australian Maritime College.
Exciting initiatives are taking place with the AMC Library staff and discussions and explorations are already afoot to be ready for the official date of Jan. 1 2008. We welcome this closer affiliation with our next-door neighbours. AMC will continue to use our Library as special borrowers, until official arrangements are in place. The AMC Library staff will soon appear as conjoint positions on Library staff. Welcome!
Launceston staff also assist and provide service for our Cradle Coast students and staff. Ian and Cherie assisted Cathy Hartigan, Librarian and Learning Skills Adviser, at Cradle Coast with a large number of Unistart students. So off to a good start.

The Law Library will be receiving a ‘mini’ facelift shortly. Work will commence over the next couple of months to revamp the computer room in to a modern ‘learning hub’ environment. We will also be installing new electronic doors and security gates into the library and reserve area. Stage two of the project will see the installation of additional computers on level one of the library – a welcome addition! There will be some minor disruption to the library during the renovation, but we hope that it will be kept to a minimum. Your patience and understanding would be appreciated.
Law Library Team |
We have two new casual staff working after hours and weekends in the Law Library this year – please welcome Elizabeth and Angela to the existing team of Deb, Chris, Carolyn, Moira, Micky, & Donna. We look forward to catching up with existing students, and meeting new students over the next couple of months.
Morris Miller Library has had several staff changes in the last few months. Scott Wylie and returned from travels and moved down from Launceston to liaise with Asian Studies and Education, as well as coordinate the Library's support for Disability.

Susan Robson |
Katrina Dewis is now Liaison Librarian in Clinical Library, and Heather Mitchell has been seconded to Science Library for the year. Susan Robson is taking maternity leave in April.
The Business Faculty should contact Richard Dearden, 6226 2395, Richard.Dearden@utas.edu.au until the new appointment begins in Easter.
We will be welcoming two new Liaison Librarians in the next few months.
The Music Library has undergone some significant and exciting change over the last few months. The imminent addition of a security gate to the library has made possible the re-arrangement of the closed reserve section to now become an open reserve. This should be of great benefit for staff and students as we begin 2007.
This change has also meant the rearranging of the coin machine, notice boards, card file, photocopier, printer/filing cabinet and the Stanley Burbury record collection and Stuart Challender collection cabinets – just about everything!

In addition we have shifted some of our shelving to accommodate some extra bays of shelving. This should buy us quite a bit more time as far as space for the collection is concerned (always a big issue in Music!).
We are continuing to acquire some great materials into the collection which are on display and updated weekly.
We will again be running a general library orientation session for first year students in Conservatorium of Music Lecture Theatre on Wed 21 st Feb at 11am.

All Libraries have tours in the first weeks of semester. We hope that all new students attend these tours to orientate yourselves to the physical library. Please see the tours and workshops page for details.
The books and journals and reference tools on the library shelves are just the tip of the ice berg. See the Subject Guides to get an idea of the coverage of electronic databases that the Library subscribes to for your study and research.
Teach yourself how to get the most out of our Library catalogue and databases such as Proquest (a great starting point) and the CSA suite of databases.
Use the Library’s Help Sheets to find out about copyright, referencing and step-by-step guides for searching all our major databases:
Many first year classes include teaching in how to use academic information for student assignments. If you do not how to go about finding, please ask your lecturer for help or enquire at your Library’s Client Service Desk.
Students and staff can access the reserve and ereserve information through the library catalogue’s Reserve Bookroom.
Staff are reminded to submit their Reserve and eReserve requests as early as possible before the beginning of Summer Schools and Semester 1, 2007. This ensures items are available for students before the start of a unit.
For more information about placing items on Reserve.
Contact your Liaison Librarian.
