News from the University Librarian

The Morris Miller Library has currently a display about Dr E. Morris Miller, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Tasmania, librarian and bibliographer. Dr Miller’s ideas of the University and the Library were similar to our current views. He believed that their purpose was to extend learning into the community to improve society and the lives of people. I encourage you to come and see the display, which has been an interdisciplinary production, created by Richard Dearden (Library), Michael Roe (History), Caroline Evans (History), Philip Mead (English), and designed by Gill Ward (Library). The display will be in the foyer to the end of June, and it will then be available online: http://www.utas.edu.au/library/exhibitions/index.html

This week we farewell Debbie Wright. More details of Debbie’s contribution to the Library service can be found later in the newsletter. Her most recent work has been to develop the Workforce Plan for the Library which has provided a framework within which we have recently appointed Anna Klebansky and Vanessa Warren in Launceston, and Kate Gordon and Juliet Beale  in Hobart. I wish Debbie well in her new role in the State Library of Tasmania.

Apologies to those who use the Morris Miller Library for the noise associated with the refurbishment. The project will provide enable CALT to move to Level 1, providing increased reader space on Level 2 and 3 of the Library. The work will be complete in September.

The new Document Delivery system will be available in the next month. There have been some delays, but we are making steady progress now. If you use this service, you may like to come to the preview sessions advertised in this newsletter.

Also attending were Douglas Newlands and Leonie Ellis from the School of Information Systems, and Jane Jeppson, Local Liaison Officer for ALIA (Australian Library and Information Association).

Document Delivery new system coming soon

We are now moving towards the launch of our new Document Delivery/ILL requesting system.

What will the new Zportal system mean for Postgrads & Researchers?

-Federated searching:
search across many library catalogues and place a request automatically
-Time saving: the request form is populated with your search results- no more cutting & pasting into a blank request form ! (unless you prefer)
-Utas holdings appear- no need to check if Utas already holds the item!
-Monitor your own Doc Del requests: Clients will be able to monitor the status of all requests via an immediate ID request number

When will the new system begin?
The test environment for the database is working satisfactorily for us, and the final stage of testing with the National Library is about to begin.

Want to preview the new system? Chris Halloran will conduct two (2) more ZPortal introductory sessions for eligible Document Delivery Service clients. Venue will be:

  • eLearning Lab no. 1, Level 2, Morris Miller Library

Departures

Susan Robson will be leaving the Morris Miller library temporarily in late April to take maternity leave. We wish her all the best in her “new role”. Until she returns, Kate Gordon will be Liaison Librarian for the schools of Sociology and Government, and Riawunna.

Farewell to Debbie

Debbie Wright, the Policy & Planning Librarian, will be leaving the University Library on 10 th May to take up a position as a Senior Librarian at the State Library of Tasmania. In her new job Debbie will be managing the Hobart Lending Library, and will also be coordinating the state-wide delivery of library services to young people.

Debbie started work at the University Library in 1995, after working for 7 years with the State Library of Tasmania and for 5 years in Darwin in public, reference and parliamentary libraries. By coincidence, Debbie first job as a professional librarian was in the Hobart Lending Library, the library she is now returning to manage. Since coming to the University Debbie has worked in a number of interesting and challenging jobs:

  • Collection Development Librarian in the Launceston Campus Library where she coordinated a $750,000 grant to enhance the Launceston print collections.

  • In 1996 she became Document Delivery Librarian, and led the transition from print to electronic document delivery.

  • From 2000 to 2005 Debbie was the Law Librarian, and then in late-2005 she was seconded to run the Library Workforce Planning Project and the AMC-UTAS Library Integration Project. We wish Debbie all the best in her new position.
