Welcome to the University Library

The Library staff welcome students from other countries who have come to study at the University of Tasmania, and they will be very pleased to help you.

How to get help

Particular librarians in Hobart and Launceston have been chosen to look after students from other countries. These librarians are your special contacts and they will show you how to use the resources and services of the University's libraries.

Alternatively you can:-

  • Ask at the Client Service Desk of any of our Libraries where the staff can help you or direct you to a librarian for specialised assistance.
  • Come to a library training session.
  • Come to a drop-in help session for practice using the catalogue, databases, electronic journals and the Internet.
  • Use the Library's Web pages, which have information about our services including opening hours, and about our resources including databases, electronic journals and past examination papers. 
  • Use the links to the Library's "Online Information Skills Tutorials" pages, which provide a set of online tutorials for help with your research. 
  • Click on the "Ask us" link at the top of the Library's Web pages and use the feedback form.

Collections of special interest

There are items in our Libraries which are particularly useful for international students, for example, books to help you with studying, writing assignments and sitting exams. Ask at the Client Service Desk about these books.

Language dictionaries
The Launceston and Morris Miller libraries have a large collection of English - other language dictionaries. Some are in the Reference section, and others can be borrowed. Some of the languages covered are:-
Burmese, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese.

Newspapers and serials

The Morris Miller and Launceston libraries contain some newspapers and serials from countries other than Australia. These include:-

We produce a number of other publications to help you use the library's resources and services. Those listed below will be especially useful to you:

Library publications should be on display and available in all branch libraries. Please ask at the Client Services Desk, if you need more assistance.

Services of special interest

Each library has a number of computers which you can use for different things.

  • Some computers are available for searching the catalogue. Ask at the Client Services Desk for help searching the catalogue.
  • On the Library's other computers you can search databases or use the Internet and also search the catalogue. You can use these computers to access MyLO (My Learning Online), do your word-processing and read your email. They have some Asian language support applications too.
  • In the Morris Miller Library, there is a computer in the Learning Hub which is linked to a scanner . All computers can burn CDs. Computers on Levels 2 and 4 of the Morris Miller Library can be booked to be use for 2 hours at specific times.
