Public use of the UTAS Library

Members of the public are welcome to visit UTAS libraries during normal opening hours. Some services we offer may be available only to students and staff of the University of Tasmania. Services that may have restrictions include printing, document delivery, some electronic resources and borrowing from Reserve Collections.

Special Borrower Membership

Members of the public, UTAS alumni and students and staff at other institutions may join as Special Borrowers by bringing a completed application form (PDF 307.8KB) together with supporting documentation to any UTAS Library.Some Special Borrower categories pay a non-refundable fee.

Organisations interested in Corporate Borrower membership should contact Karmen Pemberton, Morris Miller Librarian, or Wendy Hoyle, Launceston Campus Librarian.

Special Borrower Application form (PDF 307.8KB)

By signing the Special Borrower card the Special Borrower:

  • accepts the conditions described in the Library Rules (listed in the Special Borrower Application Form) and  Ordinances (PDF 22.7KB)  accept responsibility for any costs incurred by the Library in replacing or repairing books and other Library materials lost or damaged by the borrower
  • will advise the Library of any change of address
  • will advise the library of any change under which the borrowing privileges were granted

Special Borrower Guide

The Special Borrower guide provides information about how to borrow, what can be borrowed and the conditions of loan.

Photocopying is also available with the purchase of a reusable photocopy card.  However printing is not available.

To register in person at a UTAS Library:

  • Complete the online application form (PDF 307.8KB)
  • Read the Library Rules on the application form and sign the form to agree
  • Bring the application form to any UTAS Library Client Services Desk
  • Bring supporting documentation :
    • Photo ID
    • Proof of enrolment or membership
    • UTAS Alumni card
    • Evidence of current address

Tasmanian Polytechnic and Step Up students and staff need to apply through their institutional libraries.

Special Borrower membership is valid for twelve months.
