Public use of the Library
Members of the public are welcome to visit our libraries during
normal opening hours. Please note, however, that some of the services
that we offer may only be available to staff and students of the
University of Tasmania. Services that may have restrictions include,
but are not restricted to, document delivery, some electronic resources
and reserved items.
The public can search
our catalogue via the Web. You can also search
the catalogues of other libraries.
Borrowing University Library items
You will need a Special Borrower's card to borrow printed and audiovisual
material. Registering as a Special Borrower
normally involves the payment
of a non-refundable fee. You must borrow material
in person.
Special Borrowers can register at any of the University's libraries.
Your borrowing card will normally be available for collection on
the next working day. Signing your borrower card means you accept
the Special Borrower conditions stipulated by the Library.
Special Borrowers Application Form (PDF)
To make the process of registering as a Special Borrower easier,
please bring with you some form of identification such as a current
driver's licence, which includes your postal address.
School and matriculation college students are expected to use the
resources of their school or college library and are not eligible
to register as Special Borrowers.
Special Borrowers will need to complete a new form to renew their
status for a subsequent year.
Special Borrowers - Conditions
All borrowers (including Special Borrowers) must adhere to the
existing terms and conditions
for use of the University Library. In addition, there are some
special conditions which apply to Special Borrowers.
These are:
- your Special Borrower card must be signed by you and you must
show it each time you borrow. Loan cards (when required to borrow
manually) must be completed with name and address in full. Special
Borrowers can borrow up to 15 normal loan items for 14 days.
- borrowed material may be returned to any of the University's
libraries, in Hobart or Launceston, on or before the date due.
Items may also be returned to theCradle Coast campus, but in this
case items must be returned at least 2 working days before the
due date.
The normal loan period for Special Borrowers is 14 days from the
date of issue. Please note, however, that restrictions may apply
to the loan of some categories of material and loan periods may
vary. If a book is recalled for another reader it must be returned
within 24 hours of the receipt of a recall notice regardless of
the date due.
- you must accept responsibility for any costs incurred by the
Library in replacing or repairing books and other Library materials
lost or damaged by the borrower.
- Special Borrowers may use all areas of the University Library
except areas reserved for some special collections, for example
the Royal Society Library, or areas restricted to University staff.
- Special Borrowers must advise the Library of any change of address.
If the status under which borrowing privileges were granted changes,
you must advise the Library.
