Human Resource Management focuses on the individual, organizational and community challenges associated with the new ways of leading and working required to develop the capacity to adapt to the global challenges of economic restructuring, environmental threats, emerging markets and industries. Research and teaching in this area aims to improve human capabilities in contexts where change is continuous, diversity is pervasive and the quality of work-life increasingly has significant economic, social and health related implications; an ARC Linkage Project, led by Dr Angela Martin and in collaboration with the charity Beyond Blue concerns itself most particularly with employee mental health. There is a strong emphasis on bridging the theory/practice divide by enhancing the development and implementation of evidence-based practices utilizing a range of different methodological paradigms in the study of processes and initiatives that will foster, for example, knowledge management, ethics and constructive employment and industrial relations. Inherent in this is the recognition that what constitutes human flourishing is contested, and that power differences between groups are pervasive; critical questioning of the role of organizations, managers and organized labour in society are therefore a further component of the research and teaching approach.
