Management Philosophy, History and Policy starts with the recognition that 'management' remains the only means we have at our disposal for coping in and with our increasingly complex work and, indeed, social lives. Improving the quality of management thinking directly affects the quality of our decisions and thus the quality of our lives; management teaching and practice is about the capacity to make informed decisions based on value judgements, as opposed to making instrumentalist decisions about values. It further appreciates the study of economic history as fundamental to understanding our future, in terms of not only the development of firms, industries and economies, but also of management thought itself. And it recognises that the thought of managers and leaders shapes not only the development of business policy inside the firm (i.e. strategy), but also the development of wider public policy discourse that seeks to align economy, society and environment. Research and teaching in this area therefore encompasses work in e.g. trust, applied philosophy, management theory and methodological inquiry, business history, public policy and community, and the morality and impact of strategic decision making.
