Terms of Reference

The MBBS Admissions Committee aims to ensure that the admissions process results in students entering the School of Medicine having the qualities identified as necessary by the School. The committee monitors, evaluates, reviews and recommends changes to admissions policy in light of experience, and advises the Head of School of Medicine through the MBBS Curriculum Committee.

Specific objectives of the committee are that it:

• Advises the Head of School on admissions policy, principles, processes and related issues
• Develops selection criteria that are transparent, fair and equitable
• Reviews and modifies selection criteria
• Ensures admissions processes are easily understood by applications, staff and the public and administratively efficient, and
• Advises procedures and pathways for accommodating struggling or impaired students

The Committee will:

• Monitor the admissions process each year, particularly the intake of rural, Indigenous and international students
• Monitor the quality of the intake of students and their progress through the course
• Report annually on the admissions process and evaluations
• Make recommendations for review of the Admissions policy in light of evidence and experience
• Ensure that Admissions policy and selection procedures are widely known and understood amongst SOM staff and University admissions staff
• Advise on processes for lateral entry, credit transfer and RPL; and
• Maintain links with Australian University admissions groups and UMAT consortium
• Maintain relationships with student recruitment services and admissions
• Ensure consistency with UTAS policy
