This practical workshop has been designed for Practice Nurses (RNs and ENs) wishing to further develop and refine their skills in assisting with surgical procedures and managing post-operative wounds. The workshop will also be beneficial to RNs and ENs who are seeking employment opportunities in the General Practice arena.

Workshop Content

  • Procedure room preparation (instruments, equipment, lighting, space, consumables)
  • Patient preparation and positioning
  • Local anaesthesia selection and assisting with administration
  • Medico-legal considerations (documentation, specimen labelling requirements)
  • Establishing and maintaining a sterile field
  • Surgical handwashing, gloving and gowning
  • Suture cutting
  • Management of haemostasis/Assisting with diathermy
  • Disinfection and sterilisation
  • Post-operative wound dressings
  • Management of post-operative wound dehiscence and infection
