Asian Medical Students’ Conference in the Philippines
Six UTAS students attended the 33rd Asian Medical Students' Conference (AMSC) 2012 in Manila this July.
Four are Rural Clinical School students.
The theme of the conference was Surmounting Health Inequalities across Asia as One Region.
The students represented a group of 29 Australian delegates from across the nation.
Student Vewen Phang said it was an "experience like no other".
"We spent time visiting the local hospitals, learned about their health system, helped out people living in the slums and allowed ourselves to be completely immersed in their culture."
Nicholas Voon Sze Ee added "on top of that, we participated in a few academic competitions and Australia swept most of the prizes!"
"We came up on top having won 1st place in the Research Paper Competition, the Research Poster Competition [PDF 1.0 MB] and the Public Health Poster Competition [PDF 408 KB]."
Ashwin Bhana said they also managed a third place for the Video Competition.
"It is an honourable thing to say that both the Research Poster and Public Health Poster were both an effort by UTAS" he said.
"When travelling internationally, meeting fellow medical students from all over the world and exploring a new culture, we brought UTAS's name to fame by winning prizes at an international conference."
Aniruddha (Rudy) Sheth from the Hobart Clinical School has been appointed the new Regional Chairperson of Australia. He will be representing Australia for all things related to AMSA International.
Furthermore, Nicholas Voon from the RCS made his way onto the executive committee of AMSA International as the new Chief Editor of the Newsletter for the organisation.
Kieran Longley said it was an exciting time for UTAS and all students are urged to get involved with future events.
"Feel free to approach these students to get more information," he urged.
