Professor Kim Rainsford to repeat lecture in Launceston the following day
Pain, pills and ageing is the theme of this year’s Arthur Cobbold Memorial Lecture, to be presented by Professor Kim Rainsford in Hobart on August 8.
Prof Rainsford, an internationally recognised expert in non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, will repeat the lecture in Launceston the following day, an event hosted by the School of Medicine.
The Arthur Cobbold Memorial Lecture has been established by the University and Dr Elizabeth Cobbold as a memorial to Prof Cobbold’s contribution to the School of Medicine, and to medical education.
Prof Rainsford, originally from Adelaide and a colleague of Arthur Cobbold’s at UTAS, is currently Emeritus Professor at Sheffield Hallam University (UK). Prior to this he was Chair of Biomedical Sciences and Foundation Director of the Biomedical Research Centre at that University.
Professor Rainsford’s research interests are principally on the modes of action and adverse reactions of anti-inflammatory/analgesic drugs and natural products used to treat pain, arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. He has focussed on the serious adverse side-effects of anti-inflammatory/analgesic drugs, currently a cause of major concern. He will talk about these problems and how to cope with them in the ageing population.
