Four students who studied the effects of magnesium on patients with RLS won the first Primary Care Rotation award.
Third-year medical students Sadhishaan Sreedharan, Ben Hewson, Braden Young and Arpit Talwar (pictured with Prof. Mark Nelson who supervised the group) won the prize as part of the strongly contested 3rd-Year Primary Care Research and Health Promotion Project Presentations.
All third-year medical students have the opportunity to design a Primary Care research or health promotion project as part of their Primary Care rotation.
The winning students' research project, titled "Magnesium for Restless Leg Syndrome study (MARLSS)", questioned: In adult patients with Restless Leg Syndrome, does the use of supplemental magnesium reduce the frequency of symptoms in comparison to a placebo treatment over a period of six months?
Each of the group members received registration funding for the RACGP Annual Scientific Convention (GP11), to be held in Hobart this year, as well as support to present their research proposal at the conference.
The presentation for the second rotation is scheduled for Tuesday 31 May in the Medical Science 1 Lecture Theatre 105 at 1pm.
All are welcome to see what these future researchers and clinicians are doing as part of their training.
