Louis Adams presents Honours research in Amsterdam
School of Medicine Honours student, Louis Adams, recently presented his work to an international conference in Amsterdam.
The SpineWeek 2012 conference, held in May, is a combined conference of the largest spine societies in the world.
Louis presented his work in an oral and poster presentation, after having also presented at the 23rd annual Spine Society of Australia Scientific Meeting, held in Sydney in April.
Louis’s oral presentation was based on his Honours research in the use of rhBMP-2, a recombinant human protein used in spinal fusion surgery to help bones fuse together.
The protein has been involved in some controversy since its release, surrounding the high levels of industry sponsorship of the trials that led to it being approved for use.
Louis’s poster presentation was the result of some research in his summer break with a spine surgeon in Melbourne.
“Overall they were great with some excellent research being presented,” Louis said of the two conferences.
“I felt privileged to have been able to present at them.”
The main themes of the conferences concerned the use of minimally invasive spine surgery, and of industry sponsorship of research and publications.
