The UTAS Wilderness Weekend, run out of the Hobart Clinical School and organised by Dr Geoff Couser, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, provides an opportunity for medical and paramedic students to work together and solve common clinical problems in an unfamiliar outdoor environment.
Getting out of the emergency department and out of the back of the ambulance forces our students to think laterally, use their wits, and use principles of teamwork and leadership to deal with unexpected situations.
Plus it's a great excuse to get out into the bush at the fantastic Far South Wilderness camp, south of Dover.
Students learn about the principles of emergency and wilderness medicine and how to manage patients in unfamiliar environments from intensive care paramedics, doctors from the Australian Antarctic Division, and UTAS staff.
This sort of experience forces the students to "think outside of the box" and works to improve resilience and innovation. And it's fun!
