Dr Smith's research focuses on the genetics of host resistance to malaria. She uses genetic and pharmacological techniques to investigate the role of host enzymes in malarial infection. In collaboration with Simon Foote and Brendan McMorran (Macquarie University) she has identified several host enzymes essential for malarial parasite growth inside of a red blood cell and pharmacologically targeted these enzymes as a novel antimalarial therapy. One of these compounds now has a provisional patent and will undergo human clinical trials.
