General Responsibilities
Professor Turner is a practicing General Surgeon with interests in gastrointestinal, trauma and minimally invasive surgery.
He also has a strong interest in epidemiology, as it relates to surgical diseases and procedures. Before commencing at UTAS in June 2009, he was Associate Professor in Surgery at James Cook University, Cairns, Queensland.
Teaching Responsibilities
Teaching activities include lectures, small group tutorials and bedside teaching. Professor Turner is particularly interested in developing the diagnostic and decision-making skills of students, as well as ensuring a level of procedural competence necessary to begin medical practice.
With regard to the latter, he is currently collaborating to create a teaching program for sensitive men’s examinations.

The need to vertically integrate curriculum beyond undergraduate teaching is becoming increasingly important. Professor Turner’s educational positions within the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and General Surgeons Australia are a means of facilitating this.
He feels that it is important for all students to be imbued with expertise in surgical sciences, even if they do not intend to pursue Surgery as a career. However, those who do should be encouraged accordingly.
