Who is the Master of Public Health for?
Public Health is a multidisciplinary specialty relevant to working professionals in clinical and allied health, science, education, defence, management, social work and other graduates with an interest in public health.
UTAS academics work closely with industry to ensure teaching is linked to current policy and practice, building on networks that are essential for effective public health practice.
Entry requirements
To be considered for a place in Public Health applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
- Have graduated from an undergraduate degree of an Australian higher education institution or equivalent; or
- Experience and/or qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Faculty of Health Science Dean, as delegated to the Course Coordinator.
Why study the Master of Public Health?
Understanding the bigger picture helps us to know how and where to intervene to make changes that can impact upon and improve the health of populations. It requires competence in core practice areas including health monitoring and surveillance, disease prevention and control, health protection, health promotion, health policy planning and management and evidence based professional public health practice.
Students will gain the skills necessary to practice in the field of public health and to undertake further research and higher degree study. Upon completion you will develop:
- An enhanced understanding of public health practice in the 21st Century.
- A broad knowledge base and understanding of the fundamental principles of public health in the context of the Australian Healthcare System.
- Understanding of access and equity principles in public health and society in general.
- Awareness of the local and global context of public health.
Coursework will consolidate the understanding of factors such as socio-demographic indicators and resource allocation that impact on health and wellbeing of a population.
Delivery model
The units in Public Health have been developed for distance education, and are delivered using flexible teaching and learning strategies through online learning. This may include block teaching workshops, and application of knowledge and skills in the workplace.
