| Taxonomy | As the I-IPL-SDL-S is an SDL space, which may be used by students as they desire, it is best categorised as Level 0 on the continuum (no planned interactions). However, if students in different courses interact as they undertake SDL, it would be Level 1 (they may study and work together to understand the subject matter of anatomy and pathology from their own perspectives). |
Anatomical models are used extensively in the teaching of anatomy to MBBS, Nursing, Paramedicine, and BMedRes students in the School of Medicine. Pathology potted specimens are also used extensively in MBBS and BMedRes courses, and may be used in the other courses. Gross anatomy and anatomical pathology are 3-dimensional subjects, and using anatomical models in conjunction with potted pathology specimens and radiological images will help students to develop a mental 3D picture of both normal and diseased organ structure. Student access to these resources is currently limited to timetabled practicals and they have requested additional access for SDL and revision. Students may request keycard access to the Pathology Museum, which will soon contain a set of anatomical models, and in the longer term radiological images.
Teachers will inform students of the availability of this SDL resource and encourage them to use it, as well as to study collaboratively, including with IP colleagues. We plan to develop a survey to explore how students used the space, whether there were opportunities for IP interaction and whether they took these up (and attitudes to IP colleagues), and suggestions for improvements to the I-IPL-SDL-S.
