Welcome to the School of Medicine.

Staff at the School of Medicine have a high commitment to quality teaching and research. School staff have developed a number of innovative teaching programs that have received national recognition; the School's research strength lies in a diversity of fields such as clinical, educational, biomedical and health services research. The success of the School in a range of academic endeavours lies in the level of engagement of staff in achieving excellent health educational and research outcomes.

Induction Process

UTAS Induction Program

You should refer to the UTAS Staff Induction website for information about starting at UTAS, where you will find useful information about:

  • Campus Maps
    Maps are available for UTAS's three main campuses.
  • UTAS Staff Card
    How to obtain your UTAS identification card, which can be used to borrow items from the University Library.
  • IT and Communications
    How to acquire your UTAS username and password to access the Internet, email, and other IT facilities. Information about your telephone connection.
  • Security
    Security services and important contact information.
  • Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S)
    Occupational Health and Safety is everybody's responsibility. Please make sure you read the OH&S Procedures documents given to you as part of your Staff Induction Booklet. More information about OH&S at UTAS can be found on the Work Health and Safety page.
    As part of your induction process, you will be required to complete an online OH&S learning module.
  • Employment: work conditions, probation, Web Kiosk, leave, and remuneration
    Information about your employment conditions, how to apply for leave, and how to view your payslips and other employment details.
  • Equal Opportunity
    How UTAS works to create a fair workplace. New staff members are expected to complete Module 1 of Equal Opportunity Online learning modules (and staff with management responsibilities are required to complete Module 2 in addition).

Non-casual staff

On commencement of your appointment to the University of Tasmania, the Human Resources department will have sent you a Staff Induction Booklet. This set of documents contains forms which must be completed by you so that you can be paid and your UTAS Staff Card can be issued to you. These forms include:

  • Notification of Commencement of Duty Form
  • Tax File Number Declaration
  • Electronic Funds Transfer Authority
  • Payroll Deductions Authority
  • Superannuation Membership Application Form
  • Emergency Contact and EEO Information Form

The Staff Induction Booklet also contains information about the way the University operates, as well as information about the various services available to you. If you have any questions about the information contained in this booklet, please ask your supervisor or manager.

The booklet also contains a checklist for your supervisor to go through with you on your first day to ensure that you have all the resources required to start work.

Medical Science 1 Handbook

For staff working in the Medical Science 1 (MS1) building in Hobart, an important document to familiarise yourself with is the Medical Science 1 Building Handbook. This document outlines, amongst other topics:

  • A directory of MS1
  • After-hours access to the building
  • Onsite security
  • Fire, emergency and safety
  • First aid
  • Onsite parking
  • Telephones
  • Laboratory rules

School of Medicine Web profile

The School of Medicine Website features a list of all staff within the School, and is a useful resource for providing your UTAS contact information.Academics and researchers use it to promote their teaching and research interests and enhance their online presence. It is important that you provide your information as soon as possible after commencement within the School so that other staff can get to know you quickly.

Please use the School Profile submission form to enter your details. The data will be sent to Tony.Carew@utas.edu.au, the School's Online Project Officer. You can update your details at any time by using this form.

For Hobart-based staff members, Jo Hanuszewicz can take your photo for you. Please contact her at your earliest convenience to arrange this. If you are not in Hobart, please follow these steps to provide your own image:

  • Take a photo on your highest camera setting with a light-coloured, plain wall behind you
  • Turn your body slightly to the left or to the right, then turn your head back toward the camera

You can send your image directly to Jo at Jo.Hanuszewicz@utas.edu.au, who will prepare it for placing on the Web.
