Congratulations on attaining a place in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course at the University of Tasmania.
Year 3 IMU students begin 29 January 2013.
The following is important information for students commencing Year 3 of the MBBS course. You need to bring the documentation referred to below from your country of origin with you to enable commencement of your course.
It is a requirement of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) that all students are required to undertake a National Police Check before commencing any teaching experiences in DHHS hospital locations.
Students are advised to obtain a National Criminal History Record Certificate (police check) from their home country prior to departing for their studies in Tasmania, Australia. If this is not obtained in your home country, you will not be given approval to undertake placements until you have provided such. This will impact on your ability to successfully complete first year of the course.
Please refer to the Health Sciences National Police Record Check Guidelines and Procedures contained in the Health Science - Safety in Practice Kit (PDF 624.2 KB) pages 37 to 39.
Please bring your proof of immunisation with you if possible. It is your responsibility to read and comply with the Health Sciences Infectious Diseases Guidelines and Procedures contained in the Health Science - Safety in Practice Kit (PDF 624.2 KB) pages 42 to 58.
Students who have undergone the necessary immunisations in their home country must bring proof of required immunisation with them to Australia. Those students who have not undergone the necessary immunisations should have these done when undergoing their health check as part of their student visa application. It is recommended that immunisations be undertaken in your home country as you may find the immunisation process is more expensive in Australia. If proof of immunisation is not provided you will not be given approval to undertake placements. As approval to undertake placements will not be granted until proof of immunisation is provided, this will impact on your ability to be able to successfully commence study in Year 3.
The University recommends that you complete the Student Immunisation Record Card (PDF 895 KB) with your General Practitioner (GP) in your home country prior to commencing your studies or alternately, bring your medical documents with you and present them to an Australian GP to confirm that you have met and complied with the Infectious Disease Policy requirements.
You may be required to attend assigned clinical and professional teaching sites in locations other than the city of Hobart. These placements may involve additional associated costs (i.e. accommodation and travel) for which you will be responsible.
Please do not hesitate to contact the School of Medicine by phoning +61 3 6226 4757 if you require additional information or if you have any queries.
It is your responsibility to read and comply with the Clinical School Allocation Procedure (PDF 230.6 KB). Please note that by accepting the offer to study at the School of Medicine you agree (provided that positions are available and unless directed otherwise) to complete at least one of your final years away from Hobart.
If you wish to be put in contact with current IMU students, please email Admin@med.utas.edu.au and we will forward your queries to the relevant students for response.
