Why study the Master of Public Health?
The Master of Public Health focuses on improving health outcomes at the population level and is open to all interested in the public health area for example, public health physicians, health promotion officers, urban planners, health policy makers. It is designed to equip participants with the fundamental knowledge, skills, capabilities and awareness of the principles and practice of public health in the context of the Australian healthcare system and from a global perspective. Participants will develop basic skills in public health which will facilitate opportunities to perform roles in the discipline of public health.
Course objectives
This Masters degree provides a foundation for understanding the principles and practice of public health and epidemiology in Australia and globally. Coursework will enhance the students' understanding of the scope of public health practice in the 21st Century, including the contribution of factors such as socio-demographic indicators and resourcing to overall health status. Successful completion of the Masters degree will provide the basic skills necessary to undertake research and coursework higher degree study.
Learning Outcomes
- Develop a broad knowledge base and understanding of the fundamental principles of public health and the contribution of other disciplines or craft groups to public health practice in the context of the Australian Healthcare System
- Demonstrate an awareness of the local and global context of public health
- Demonstrate commitment to access and equity principles in public health and society in general
The Master of Public Health will strengthen the careers of health professionals in the discipline of public health, and offer other graduates an opportunity to pursue a career in public health within and outside of Tasmania.
