Welcome to the School of Medicine at the University of Tasmania! Please find below important information detailing information about commencing study in 2012.
The two compulsory units that will be studied in 2012 are CAM101 and CAM102. Please note that there are no optional units in the MBBS Course and there is no credit awarded for previous study in the MBBS.
All Year 1 MBBS students are required to attend orientation and briefing sessions provided by the School of Medicine Academic Staff and the Tasmanian University Medical Students' Society (TUMMS).
The School will provide new students an opportunity to meet other medical students and lecturers and be taken on brief tours of the Medical School facilities. A detailed overview of the curriculum will also be provided.
Orientation is to be held February 22-24, 2012. The activities (PDF 101.4 KB) that are planned for these 3 days is in draft form and will not be finalised until late January 2012.
A current St John Ambulance Workplace 2 - Senior First Aid certificate or equivalent is required by every student. This certificate may be completed before admission to medicine (certificate must be current) or whilst enrolled in CAM101. A copy of your certificate must be presented to the Student Affairs Office, level 1 Medical Science 1 Building, 17 Liverpool Street, Hobart. Without a current First Aid Certificate a student will not be eligible to progress to CAM102. Please note that the School of Medicine organises First Aid training for International students (not Domestic students) and you will be contacted regarding this in the first few weeks of semester 1, 2012.
On enrolment students will be allocated a UTAS email address. The School uses this email address as its primary form of communication with students. It is very important that emails are checked regularly. Please ensure you only use your UTAS email for all University correspondence.
Please familiarise yourself with the Safety in Practice Kit (PDF 624.2 KB) and complete the following forms from it:
You ONLY need to have a Health Assessment form (PDF 150 KB) completed by your usual GP if you have made a Medical Disclosure by ticking yes to any of the health questions in Section 8 in the Safety in Practice Agreement. Please hand this form into the Student Affairs Office located on Level 1 of the Medical Science 1 Building, 17 Liverpool Street by the end of week 1, semester 1 unless you need to have your GP complete the Health Assessment form, in which case email Rose-maree Lyneham, Team Leader Student Affairs ( rlyneham@utas.edu.au ) to request extra time.
Please note that the Student Immunisation Record Card is due to the Student Affairs Office by the end of April 2012.
Within the Safety in Practice Kit are instructions regarding how to obtain a National police Check (pages 37 to 41). These checks can take up to 6 weeks to arrive, so you should apply for one early. National Police Certificates have to be sighted by a staff member of the Student Affairs Team by the end of Semester 1 at the latest. Failure to produce a National Police Check will result in your CAM101 result being with held and you will not be permitted to progress to CAM102.
Mantoux testing is required by all year 1 students and is organised by the School of Medicine in conjunction with the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Respiratory Clinic. The RHH patient registration form (PDF 29.1 KB) and the MBBS TB form (PDF 292.3 KB) both need to be completed prior to orientation. They will be collected from each student at orientation on Wednesday February 22 first thing, so please have these ready to pass to the Administrative Officers when they request them. If you have already had a Mantoux test, please provide evidence of this to Student Affairs and a copy will be made for your file. Mantoux testing will be conducted on Friday February 24 2012 in the morning and the subsequent follow up read of the reaction will be conducted Monday February 27 in the morning.
The final two years of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course are conducted within the three Clinical Schools: The Hobart Clinical School, the Launceston Clinical School and the Rural Clinical School (located in Burnie). Students will be allocated to any of these three Clinical Schools and should therefore be willing to relocate if directed to do so. Please familiarise yourself with the Clinical Allocation Policy (PDF 230.6 KB) and complete the following form: Clinical Allocation Agreement (PDF 119.5 KB)
A detailed timetable for CAM101 will be posted weekly on MyLO from week 1 of semester. Note that on occassion lectures or other learning activities have to be rescheduled. You should keep Monday to Friday 8am - 5 pm available for university learning when scheduling your employment and other activities. 2012 Calendar (PDF 15.2 KB)
