Throughout your Bachelor of Paramedic Practice degree you will be required to undertake clinical placement in a variety of healthcare settings. It is important to realise you will be required to attend placement at nominated times and you will be required to undertake clinical placement in locations which may involve travel and/or relocation which may be at your own expense. During clinical placements you will work as part of an emergency ambulance crew and as such you will be required to successfully satisfy the following requirements, details of which can be found at FHS Professional Experience Placement.
In order to protect the public, health care agencies require all students to undertake a National Police Check before commencing any clinical practice. Further information will be provided at orientation or found in the Safety in Practice Kit.
All students are required to have a current Senior First Aid Certificate from an approved provider prior to attending clinical placements. As there are clinical placements early within the course you are advised to obtain the First Aid Certificate prior to commencing the course.
The University has a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of students and requires all paramedic students to be immunised prior to commencement of the course. You will need to be immunised against Hepatitis B. For further information, please contact your GP, Local Council or Immunisation Info Line (1800 671 811 or http://www.immunise.health.gov.au).
The Faculty of Health Science’s Infectious Disease Policy is available in the Safety in Practice Kit.
It is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the policy. It is suggested you commence your Hepatitis B Immunisation prior to the course as it may take several months. Please note a number of health care agencies in the state require students to either provide evidence of immunisation status for conditions such as Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis or to undergo the vaccination process prior to working/studying in the agency.
If you accept this offer please go your GP within the next 2 weeks and commence your Hepatitis B immunisation schedule, failure to do so may exclude you from some units and delay your progress through the course.
A high standard of health and physical fitness is required to perform the duties of an Ambulance Paramedic and you will be required to undertake a health and medical examination from a qualified Medical Officer. Further information will be provided at orientation or found in the "Safety in Practice Kit".
Whilst involved in clinical tutorials/workshops and undertaking clinical placements you will be required to conform to dress standards to ensure compliance with Workplace Health & Safety requirements. There will be a cost involved and details on these requirements will be provided at orientation or found in the Safety in Practice Kit.
You are required to read and sign a SPA prior to commencing clinical practice in the ambulance service and health care agencies. Further information regarding this will be provided prior to your clinical placement.
