About
Does the piano have a role in music in the 21st century? You bet it does, and students enrolling in this Piano XXIC program will have their ears pinned back, fingers bent in all directions, and fragile little minds forcibly warped as the universe of keyboard music is heroically traversed at light speed. Oxygen cylinders will remain at base camp as the heady, rarefied air of virtuoso abyss-jumping and strange quantum states challenge the conservatism of comfortable bourgeois pianism. This is a program of ideas and techniques for how to live as a musician in the 21st century. The program starts with Liszt, the source and inventor of the piano recital as experimental arena, and investigates the major figures in music up until the present day. The complete arsenal of pianistic techniques will be enriched by composition and improvisation classes. An alternative to the ubiquitous competition philosophy infecting every area of artistic endeavour, this program seeks to emphasise unique individual pathways for a deeply satisfying life immersed in music.
