Performance students may elect a year of study comprised of either an integrated research project, consisting of performances and a linked written exegesis, or a series of performances along with an independent practical or written music project (undertaken as a Complementary study). Composition students must present a folio of compositions and an exegesis or an independent written or practical project (undertaken as a Complementary study).
Musicology and music theory students complete a programme of coursework and write a thesis of approximately 15,000 words.
All music performance and music composition students who elect to complete the exegesis and all musicology and music theory students are required to attend the music research methodology class in semester 1.
