James McAuley was one of greatest, and probably the most controversial, twentieth century Australian poet. Beginning with his notorious Ern Malley hoax in the 1940s, McAuley remained a provocative figure in Australian literary, political and religious circles all his life.
He moved with his family to Hobart in the early 1960s, and was appointed Professor of English at the University of Tasmania. He lived at New Town until his early death in 1976. Tasmania figures prominently in his later poems, which include much of his finest work.
James McAuley was an accomplished musician, and music underlies a great deal of his poetry.
UTAS Adjunct Professor David Bollard will perform piano music selected to complement poems chosen and read by John Honey.
