Low register playing forms a vital part of every horn players skill set, yet it is no longer really considered to be a specialist skill and is often somewhat neglected. Whatever the reasons for this may be, there are many great low register moments in the horns repertoire, which surely require that this facet of playing receives due care and attention. There are, however, only a small number of readily available resources that emphasize the importance of a good low register and discuss the technical difficulties associated with it, and even fewer recognised solo works that can be performed to display these skills.
Through extensive research and numerous interviews with leading performers, teachers and composers Robert has already discovered several new resources and also a number of exciting new solo options for the "Low Horn" player since beginning his PhD project in 2010. Several of these works will be performed in the two recitals this year along with classic "Low Horn" repertoire, whilst he continues to explore the developments in low horn technique and influences that have changed how composers write for the horn in the lower register, both historically and currently.
