Welcome to the latest innovation of the Conservatorium of Music - the Overture advanced placement program.

Information for Parents and Students
The Overture program is an initiative of the University of Tasmania’s Conservatorium of Music. In cooperation with participating schools, the Overture program aims to identify exceptional Tasmanian music students in their final years of high school and provide an extension program for a small number of students allowing them to participate in some University study concurrently with study for the TCE certificate.

The study at the Conservatorium is intended to supplement Year 11 and/or 12 school music studies (students must be concurrently enrolled in TCE pre-tertiary music and are expected to be active particpants in school ensembles and other music activities) easing the transition to tertiary study and with the clear expectation that Overture students will continue their studies at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium when they have completed their TCE.

Areas of Study
Overture is open to Years 11 and 12 instrumentalists, vocalists and composers in either Classical or Contemporary modes. Areas of extension for an individual student, and the units to be studied under the auspices of the program, will be determined by the Conservatorium on advice from and in coordination with the participant’s school.

Students will normally undertake no more than one solo performance or composition unit in the program. Students may not undertake more than two units in a semester and only one subject in the first semester of enrolment for Year 11 students. The maximum number of units that may be undertaken in the program is four over two years. All enrolment decisions must be discussed and approved by both the partner school the Overture coordinator. Ensemble units are also available for Overture students .

Such classes will use curricula designed for BMus students and will be subject to the same assessment criteria, processes and policies. Unit outlines setting out the requirements and the assessment criteria for each unit undertaken will be given to students at the beginning of each semester.
