Welcome to the Prelude advanced placement program.
Information for parents and students
The Prelude program is an initiative of the University
of Tasmanias Conservatorium of Music. In co-operation
with participating schools the Prelude program aims
to identify exceptional Tasmanian music students in their
final years of high school and provide an extension program
for a small number of students allowing them to participate
in some classes at the Conservatorium of Music concurrently
with study for the TCE certificate. The study at the Conservatorium
is intended to supplement Year 11 and/or 12 school music studies
(students must be concurrently enrolled in TCE pre-tertiary music) easing the transition to tertiary study and with the
clear expectation that Prelude students will continue
their studies at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium
when they have completed their TCE.

Areas of study
Prelude is open to Years 11 and 12 instrumentalists, vocalists and
composers in either Classical or Contemporary modes. Year 12 students
will attend performance classes for their instrument throughout
the University academic year and may continue studying their instrument
or composition with their current teacher. Areas of extension for an individual student,
and the units to be studied under the auspices of the program,
will be determined by the Conservatorium on advice from the
participants school.
Students will normally undertake no more than one solo performance or
composition unit in the program. Students may not undertake more than two Conservatorium units in a semester and only one in the first semester of enrolment for Year 11 students. The maximum number of units that may be undertaken in the program is six. All enrolment decisions must be discussed and approved by both the partner school and the Prelude coordinator. Other units available include Ensemble
Studies, Foundation Core Studies, Tonal Theory, Chromatic
Theory and Music History units. (A full list of offerings
in the Bachelor of Music is to be found in the University
of Tasmania Course and Unit Handbook). Music Theory and most ensemble units associated
with the Prelude program are held after 4pm on weekdays
to avoid timetable clashes with school-based subjects.

Assessment
Students in the Prelude program will attend classes
alongside BMus students and will be subject to the same assessment
criteria, processes and policies. Unit outlines setting out
the requirements and the assessment criteria for each unit
undertaken will be given to students at the beginning of each
semester.

Minimum entry standards and selection criteria
Students wishing to apply for a place in the Prelude program must complete an application form signed by their
school principal.

The program is open to instrumentalists, vocalists and composers
in either Classical or Contemporary modes.
The minimum entry standards for consideration for the Prelude program are:

or
Exceptional achievement in year 10 music subjects for students who are commencing
Year 11
or

and
2. Good academic results over most recent 12 months of study
and outstanding commitment to school-based music activities.
All application forms must be accompanied by

any other relevant documentation

compositions

Applicants satisfying the above criteria will take the Conservatorium

to assess to skill levels of applicants for the Diploma of
Music and the Bachelor of Music. A sample of this test is
available from the Conservatorium Office.
Students who score satisfactorily in the Conservatorium entrance test
will then be invited for a live audition. Students are asked
to prepare 3 contrasting pieces (15 mins) for this audition.
Only a limited number of places are available in the Prelude program and an annual quota will apply.

Costs
Students selected for participation in the Prelude

University Credit
The Prelude program provides an incentive for students
to continue in the Bachelor of Music degree at the University
of Tasmania Conservatorium when they have completed their
TCE. Any units satisfactorily completed under the Prelude
program are credited towards the degree requirements of
the University of Tasmania Bachelor of Music thereby reducing
the number of units required for completion of the degree
(a minimum of 24 x 12.5% units). Students participating in the Prelude
program may gain credit for up to 3 units in the Bachelor
of Music in any given year, and a maximum of 6 units overall.
No credit will
be given for failed or incomplete units.
For information on how Prelude units may contribute to the TER score please refer to the University's High Achiever program website page on HAP and the TER score.
